I would like to put a wood back plate on my next build, a Deluxe 5 J.
1. Who do I ask?  :binkybaby:
2. Can they be color-matched?  :toothy11:
3. Can they be made with magnets, ala many high end bass builders, for attachment? :sign13:
I'm sure someone here does 'em, I just can't find the guy..... :confused4:
Thanks for the info....  :occasion14:

Hey thanks for the referral Doug!!!
No problemo!!!...... :rock-on:

I wonder if this can be done with pickup covers ala http://i763.photobucket.com/albums/xx279/Makosoft/Primordial/01.jpg this, or maybe that would screw with the pickups  :help: any ideas?

Allright guys I'm all for setting up my operation to do some of these wood covers with the magnets.  Only question is what kind of magnets should I use and they will need to be pretty thin or if  they will be glued to the mounting lip of the cover and the body drilled?  I make these covers the same thickness as a plastic cover about 1/16" or 2mm so there isn't much room for a magnet.  But on the body you have about 1 11/16" to work with, which should be enough to mount the magnet for the body and a tiny piece of steel in the cover?  I think that would be the best bet for mounting these with magnets.  Any suggestions for where I can get some small magnets?  I think 4 per cover just like screws would be best.

Thoughts or comments......  :guitaristgif:

First of all I'd say test various strengths of magnets. My dad gave me some "supermagnets" when I was smaller which were maybe about the size of this sign in width  :kewlpics: and the size of the smiley in thickness, or so, and when they got hold of something, man they would STICK. Either you had to remove them with pliers or you would have to draw them towards the edge of the object and pull it off. So, even small magnets can be really strong, and I'd advice you to make sure to find the proper amount of strength and number of magnets needed.

That's my advice at least.

Sounds like you got some of those 'rare earth' magnets.  I know they are super strong.  Especially magnet to magnet.  I was thinking about just doing a magnet inlayed into the body and a small maybe washer inlayed into my cover should do it.  I am thinking a magnet the size and shape of a small watch battery.

My kid has toys called magneticks or something like that.... they are plastic building toys with magnets in the ends of them.  I was thinking that those magnets would be perfect.  I think he might get pissed if I started hacking his toys all up to get the magnets out of them.

Thanks for the input kaoskadosk

I think you're right to put the magnets in the body and epoxy some steel tabs to the covers. That way, the magnet mounting can be made adjustable so it just contacts the cover because even the slightest gap dramatically reduces the pull of the magnet. Problem with that is the end user has to mount the magnets, and not everyone is comfortable with drilling/screwing their guitar bodies. But, that's their problem.

I think you're going to want to use rubber magnets. They're common and inexpensive, and can be bought by the roll/sheet. I know you don't want to use those little neodymium magnets - they're for towing cars or warping light or pulling satellites out of orbit <grin> We have a series of them spanked onto the iron house support I-beam in the basement, and it's amazing the grip those little buggers have. I don't know if they're ever coming off. A magnet slightly less in diameter and about the height of 3 dimes stacked up will hold several pounds. Pretty handy for holding things you want out of the way for a moment like screwdrivers, wrenches, tape measures, etc.

Overall, I think it's an interesting idea, but I'm not sure it's a viable retrofit thing. I suspect the whole thing would be much more easily implemented in the body design, where you could allow for wood for magnet mounting bosses, and perhaps adjust the depth of the cover lip rout and so forth. Besides, does anyone take the control cavity cover off so often that it needs to be a tool-free operation?

Use tiny rod magnets similar to those in a single coil pickup, only smaller. They can fit into the existing screw holes on the body

A solution in search of a problem? Even NASA uses screws to hold spaceships together... add a poll question to this, "How many people have stripped out control panel screws due to extreme stress/constant usage...." :icon_scratch:

Changing out batteries in an active bass can strip out those holes fairly soon.... There's a reason
W puts threaded inserts in the Gecko plates....
Thanks to everyone for adding to the topic BTW!!!
