What would you do? Warmoth LP jr: an old one with a newer neck

Lol, I'm not refinishing it or replacing it.  I've spent 15+ years relicing that mofo, and it sounds amazing.  How can you not love the simplistic awesome ugliness of purple metallic beat to fook with canary and ugly streaked ebony?  It's one of those rare guitars that just feels right, like it was designed with those components by the FSM itself.  To be honest, my main concern is that the world will implode if i put a p90 in the neck... perfection just may cause existence to cease.

I see. Well, I'm not sure the world would implode, but I can't imagine being happy with a P90 in any position, so I'd say skip it. To my ear, they're just noisy bitches with poor frequency response. But, that's just me. Also not a fan of streaked Ebony, but again, that's just me. I'm sure it's a great wood, but the appearance puts me off. Looks defective, or like some sort of compromise. Y'know - like a Wal-Mart version of real Ebony. To me, Ebony should be black and as dense/smooth as polycarbonate plastic, only harder. If someone wants visible grain, get some Pau Ferro, Ziricote or Kingwood. They're all very dense and smooth, with a much better natural appearance. Kingwood especially seems to have been touched by His Noodly Appendage.

I am a HUGE les Paul jr fan and you current axe looks awesome.  I would say leave it.

If however you must add a new pick up, I would go with something unique.  Since you are already sporting a tele style bridge and a good humbucker, I would go with a good lipstick style single coil.  I think that would look and sound great.

I agree about Ebony.  It should be jet black and perfect.  I chose this neck because a) Canary is ugly b) streaked ebony is ugly c) purple metallic painted guitar bodies with hb tele bridges are ugly.  It seemed a proper fit.  If the neck had been a prettier wood, or the ebony had been nice, i'd have felt guilty putting it on this guitar.  As it is, it's like the neighbor girl you wouldn't date in high school, but you had no problem, well, you know.  As the years have passed, she's still a lot of fun, and I'm not ashamed to take her out to a bar and start a couple fights.  She rocks, and I've grown into respecting the ugliness since it leads to such a wonderful... performance.  ;)

P90s are my perfect guitar pickup, mostly because they're unforgiving when it comes to sloppy playing.  They have a large dynamic range and are tonally where I want a guitar in my music.

Mmm... neighbor girls... decades later, I still fantasize about them. Of course, now Cindy's probably a greasy heifer with 19 kids, Karen's probably dead, along with her sister Denise. Michelle's tits are probably doing well if they can avoid being cut up by her belt buckle... I'm old, is what I'm sayin'. But I digress.

I'm not sure I'd call Canary wood "ugly". But, it is highly variable so you never know. The piece you've got is somewhat variegated, but I have one here that's pretty uniform and I've seen plenty like it. Looks like a lightly stained version of something lighter, like maple, albeit with a more open grain.

Canary is interesting at best, but it generally looks like dirty maple.  The piece I have is my all-time favorite.

Um... guess it all depends on the age of your neighbor's girls. Last one would have landed me in jail, first one was every early-pubescent boy's fantasy: blonde and a tendency towards tanning in her yard.

Get an Ebony over Pau Ferro neck with SS frets and you'll never look back. You'll think Canary is for po' folk. Pau Ferro feels like super-fine sanded Maple, but no finish required. I mean, a silky-smooth satin finish that never glosses up or wears off, and it's harder than... something very hard. Just a lovely thing. Couple that with the ultra-smooth feel of Ebony, and the glassy feel of stainless frets? Mmm... Chicken soup for the soul. Everybody should have one.

Bubinga is very similar, although it has a slightly orange/red tint to it that doesn't always match up well with some other colors.

I have from Warmoth (neck/fingerboard):
Figured Mahogany/Ebony
Purpleheart/Ebony
Canary/Ebony (x2)
Pau Ferro/Ebony
Maple/Ebony (x4)
Bloodwood/Ebony
Padouk/Ebony

as well as

Padouk/Padouk
Mahogany/Rosewood
Gauncalo/Kingswood
Maple/Kingswood
Maple/Rosewood (x3)
Pau Ferro/Pau Ferro (x2)
Maple/Maple (x4)
Walnut/Maple
Cocobolo/Maple (not Warmoth, but equal quality)

I have a pretty good idea of what I like in woods, lol.  In all honesty, Bloodwood is the best hardwood I've ever had for a neck.  It ages well, and is smooth as glass.  Warmoth's pro neck construction with an Ebony board is very, very bright.  I can't say it's my favorite, but I obviously do find my uses for it.  ;)

edit:  I keep remembering more necks.

Forgive me for being presumptuous; my files are incomplete. Somehow, I'm missing the inventory of your guitar collection. We'll just fix that forthwith <grin>

Anyway, you know what I'm talking about. Isn't that Ebony/Pau neck just the best? Although, I see you have a Goncalo/Kingwood piece. What could possibly be wrong with that? I haven't tried the Bloodwood yet, either. I have a Black Korina body here I think I'm going to bloody up, similar to that one that was shown here not too long ago. I gotta think a Bloodwood neck would go well with that finish. Have to do a little more research, though. If it oxydizes to purple or beige or some other such foolishness, I'll have to think of something else.

My bloodwood neck has aged to a deep red, almost magenta-esque in places my hand oils have touched it most.  I'll post some pics tonight.

AFAIK, Marko is still kicking himself for selling his bloodwood necked BK str*t. It was a pretty great neck apparently.

I'll look forward to seeing those. See if you can get a shot outside, if there's still daylight. Even phone cameras do a decent job in natural light, and you always get better color rendition. Doesn't matter if it's cloudy.

Sounds like he still has it. Either that, or it's living close by.

Cagey, I don't think Mark knows everything in his collection, as you can tell :P

Hehe! Yeah, he does seem to be taxing his memory <grin>

I have too much cool stuff, and I feel guilty not using more of it more often.  I'm in the process of throwing it at the wall and seeing what sticks.  I won't sell any of the rest, but I will loan it out or store it.  Our den looks like a shelter for exotic wood.

Nope, sold it years ago. He's called "The Central Whatsit" now but it's Marko alright. I don't know who this "a priori" clown is :icon_biggrin:
