What would be required albums if there were such a class called Rock: 101

difficult question, dude! can't really say.

well, appetite for destruction, thats for sure. no need to explain i guess.

UFO, Strangers in the night. The anger Schenker has towards the rest of the band is so audible in every note he plays. So full of fire. just great. not to mention the pure, sheer riffage of that german bastard  :headbang1:

The Darkness. Permission to land. That album is a MAJOR stepping stone towards the rest of rock. its a dooropener to thin lizzy, journey, rush, ac/dc, and many others. every song is just a hallmark for ROCK!

Thin Lizzy, Jailbreak. C'mon, emerald, jailbreak, romeo and a lonely girl? those songs are so awesome. boys are back in town and cowboy song are classics, ofcourse. I chose jailbreak over live and dangerous, cause I really like romeo and a lonely girl.

Queen. night at the opera, OR day at the races. why night at the opera? every song is awesome, with bohemian rapsody, love with my car and death on 2 legs as the best songs. Why day at the races? I love 'melancholy blues'. just for one song an entire album? yes. and ofcourse many other songs on 'day' but still. melancholy blues is my favorite song of all time.

I could choose van halen 1, led zep 1 or 2 or 3 or 4, but they are hallmarks by songs, not albums. I could propose alice cooper's school's out, but I don't like alice cooper that much. or hey stoopid, but, again, i don't like cooper that much. I could propose some stuff by deep purple, but I can't stand hammond organs, nor D.P., except for the guitarstuff..I could propose ac/dc, but I really don't like 'm. hate the vocals. he sounds like a horse with its balls squased between 2 rocks :P

I wanted to put 'love at first sting' , blackout or lovedrive in my list. imho the 3 best albums by the scorpions (or taken by force, because 'we'll burn the sky' is REALLY great!!!!" but they haven't shaped rock as much as the others. I just like 'm.

I'm also a big Queen fan, and agree those are their best work. Not to discount their other stuff; it's all good. Those guys had talent in the bank.

Incidentally, "My Melancholy Blues" was on "News of the World", not "A Day at the Races". "Races" had:

  • Tie Your Mother Down
  • You Take My Breath Away
  • Long Away
  • The Millionaire Waltz
  • You and I
  • Somebody to Love
  • White Man
  • Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy
  • Drowse
  • Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together)

While "News of the World" had:

  • We Will Rock You
  • We Are the Champions
  • Sheer Heart Attack
  • All Dead, All Dead
  • Spread Your Wings
  • Fight from the Inside
  • Get Down, Make Love
  • Sleeping on the Sidewalk
  • Who Needs You
  • It's Late
  • My Melancholy Blues

For me the lists are entirely too focused. I would have to say Chuck Berry for sure (with the help of his cousin Marvin, Marvin Berry :icon_biggrin:). Then on to something like Jimi ushering in even more progression on guitar based music. Van Halen is just the natural evolution so that is on the list as well. To me Appetite and Justice are also there. Even though they are from the same time they were influential for different reasons. Appetite was more of a back to basics raunchy straight ahead in your face no apologies kind of thing (plus there are so many punk undertones going on, Duff's basslines are so melodic compared to traditional rock bass). Justice gave birth to the first Metallica music video which brought good (not british) metal to the mainstream. I know I'm going to get shit for this but you can't deny Nevermind needs to be on the list as well. It was at the forefront of an evolution in music. Most people want to focus on the lack of virtuosity going on with the Grunge acts but for every example of that there are plenty more of great players and songwriters. If you can listen without prejudice the Beatles are all over Kurt's work. Nirvana had more influence in music than the kooky Shenker guy ever will. It's not right, it's not fair, but it's true. Sometimes we forget that as musicians we view the world just a little bit differently than most.

Pablo, I like your picks but if it were rock 101, then I think we need to be earlier rock, which is reflected in my picks
but that is opinion
I chose Robert Johnson because I really think a lot of early rock guys can point back to him, and do
Pet sounds, wow the beach boys showed us how to sing
Ziggy, face it with out Bowie, Glam would never have happened and still with current pop, who is GAGA but a female Bowie
Paranoid, the father of metal
Back in Black, well name a better work by the fore front of loud basic Rock and roll
Abbey road, was the Beatles best and the Beatles were one of the biggest bands ever
Some girls is my fav Stones work and they still seem to be around after 40 years
Dark side of the moon, launched more toke outs than any other Recording to date.

I guess I could have added a few others I have seen in this thread, but I was looking for 101, not 201 or 301,
I know there are great bands named and Pablo I like your picks.
And Billion Dollar Babies should have been on my list

I agree totally about the early stuff and I was glad to see your suggestion of Robert Johnson. I was trying to approach it from a much more generic general overview kind of thing. I have pretty diverse tastes in music, I think most musicians do, but there's also the industry. I'll give just about anything a fair shot. Cept for bagpipe music. I'm almost certain it was conceived to keep Nessie in the lake.

When I listed Sheer heart Attack, I meant News of the world.. I don't know why I always mix those two up...  :dontknow:

I can never keep them straight, either. I suspect it's because there are so many good songs on each album that we can't remember which ones match up with which. Plus, "Sheer Heart Attack" was an album title that didn't have the song by the same name on it. It didn't show up until the "News of the World" LP, which was released later.

Incidentally, while all the members of Queen are/were highly educated, did you know that Brian May now has his doctorate? In astrophysics, of all things.

May did a column for a bit in the NY Times re: Astrophysics and science generally.  See, e.g., http://acrosstheuniverse.blogs.nytimes.com/author/brian-may/?scp=2&sq=%22brian%20may%22&st=cse

To be fair, the Times was moribund before Murdoch - he's just hastening the demise.  High quality reporting and features cost money, and the money used to come from print advertising - but circulation's down, and NYTimes has not managed to generate ad revenue commensurate with the quality (and hence the cost) of its reporting.  Show me any old-line newspaper besides the Wall Street Journal that's come up with a truly profitable online pay-for-subscription model and I'll shake your hand.

Show me any newspaper that prints anything worth reading besides the WSJ, and I'll shake your hand back.

it's amazing he's as rich as he is, since he seems to have a singular talent for screwing things up.

I used to work for Westinghouse Corporation, and they were the same way. They'd find a business that was making good money and had tons of promise for the future, so they'd buy it and ruin it. Not on purpose, of course, it just worked out that way. It was a running joke among the corporate employees when we'd hear that they'd bought some exciting company or another we'd say "Aw! That's too bad!". On the surface it would seem like a Good Thing, because the company being purchased would suddenly have a massive infusion of capital and other resources, but along with that came the tons of bureaucracy and management by committee that all massive corporations have, which invariably destroyed it.
