What would be required albums if there were such a class called Rock: 101

Hannaugh, I see you are about a big Led Zeppelin fan as I am.  I owe most of my growth as a guitarist to learning their stuff, and it has been a good rock/blues foundation.  I have learned Black Dog, The Ocean, Over the Hills and Far Away, Tea for One, How Many More Times, and Rain Song.  I can't play each song perfectly in it's entirety, but you can get the idea.  What songs have been a big part of your playing?

I can play some of their songs minus the solos... a lot of it is just way beyond my level of playing.  I know about half of Over The Hills and Far Away, can play the main riffs from Black Dog and No Quarter pretty successfully.  I used to know all of Tangerine because it's not that hard, but I haven't played it in about 5 years, so I probably forgot it by now.  I feel like I played Heartbreaker at some point too.  This was all stuff I was trying my hand at in high school though.  I haven't really tried to play any of their stuff in a few years.  Now that I'm better, I should get back into it though.  I think it would be awesome to learn their version of I Can't Quit You Babe.  The Ocean would be fun too because my LP has the Jimmy Page wiring, so I could do the "Peter Green tone" thing.

Some of the Songs that I have learned I admit have faded away, like Rain Song, and Heartbreaker.  I play the crap out of Over the Hills and Far Away, and Black Dog, so it is the freshest in my mind.  I would like to get back into it like I used to and learn I Cant Quit You Babe as well.  Theres always A Whole Lotta Love :laughing7:, but that gets a little boring playing that by yourself.

Mine?
Hmm...

Abbey Road, because it's good from start to finish, and not just "rock for rock's sake"
The Wall, because I feel it is the best Pink Floyd album.
Led Zeppelin II, but it's hard to choose a favorite LZ album.
Bluesbreakers With Eric Clapton, because it helped lay a bunch of groundwork.
VHI, because it helped define a new stage of music, where technical ability was more prominent.

Nobody mentioned the Beach Boys.  While not exactly ROCK as we now see it, still, the number of things that they did.  I'd add them.

I've never been able to get into Zepp. There's two or three songs I kinda like until they screw it up, but I just can't get into zep. That said, a band being describe as a Zepplin knockoff is pretty much a guarantee I'll like it. Go figure.

I can respect that.  Some people get it, some don't.  My brother likes the older Zepp when it was more about the blues, than the stuff they created later.  Whether it's Plant's voice or Page's somewhat abstract rants during solo's, it's an aquired taste, like coffee.  I didn't start liking all of their stuff until my later 20's So I take it you like Wolfmother? :guitaristgif:

For a Metal 101 class:

Black Sabbath : Paranoid
Judas Priest : British Steel
Iron Maiden : Number of the Beast
Metallica : Master of Puppets
Slayer : Reign in Blood.

I think that would be a good introduction as to how metal got its foundation

Here's one to add to that list:

Megadeth: So Far, So Good, So What

I have to admit, Wolfmother is a guilty pleasure for me.  They're almost a parody band because they basically take that sound and oversimplify and exaggerate it so much.  I like them in almost the same way that I like Ween.

just lookin through my albums in no specific order

Pink Floyd -the wall
ACDC- Any album early stuff later stuff works too just not as good
Eric Clapton -best of clapton
Van halen- VH1
Aerosmith- greatest hits that album rocks

Never heard of Wolfmother. And I don't like Whitesnake as much as I thought I did. I do love the singles (speaking of guilty pleasures) but I think I bought two albums used online before I figured that out.

First album is better than the second, IMO.

Wolfmother are a national embarrassment.

If you're Australian.  If not, they're just funny.  :laughing7:

I liked a few songs of the second album.  The lineup completely changed between the first and second album though.  I think the guy with the big hair is the only common thing between the two.

I never minded wolfmother, much better then the shite that was hitting the British pop charts for the past few years.
