I am looking at the transtint dyes
http://www.lmii.com/CartTwo/thirdproducts.asp?CategoryName=Dyes&NameProdHeader=TransTint%AE+Dyes+

and the stew mac dyes
http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Finishing_supplies/Colors,_tints,_and_stains/ColorTone_Concentrated_Liquid_Stain.html?tab=Pictures#details

Both seem like they are good but I was looking on advise based on experience before I order it.
I will be using it on a quilted maple top from the unique choice section and I would hate to spend the money and not have the best dye possible.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I have nothing but good things to say about transtint dyes. It's very easy to apply and it's very forgiving even if your a little splotchy in areas, and they have some color options that I haven't seen from stewmac.

I'm sure the stewmac dyes are good but I have not tried them out yet. Has anybody used both?

Mohawk, one of the best

Behlen is a subsidiary of Mohawk (or rather, Mohawk turned into a conglomerate which also contains Behlen and other companies, and still agressively markets "Mohawk Brand" products)

Ditto for Mohawk products.  They are top notch.  If you don't want to go with a dye they also make a line of rattle can toners specifically for electric guitars.

Much of their stuff is available through Woodcraft retail outlets or the Woodcraft website.

Thanks guys, I will check out the Mohawk stuff.
I got a month or so till my build gets here so I got time to order some and test it out.

Any one know where to get some scrap pieces of quilted maple for dye testing?

Your in SF bay area.  Go to woodcraft.  They have several stores throughout the SF bay area, I buy from San Carlos store.  There's also a place in SJ that was mentioned by another forum member, can't remember the name.  They have transtint, and scrap wood, all species.  I highly recommend the 3m sanding blocks.  Good luck.

Thanks for the info
They have a store in dublin so I will hit them up tommorow

I picked up some MIXOL brand dye and some test wood.
It came out pretty cool.

They did not have mohawk in stock when I went, but I am going to order some off the web.

Do you think mohawk is better than transtint or mixol?
