Dots that are set on the edge of the fretboard (normally low E side) rather than centered. Godin used to do this. Gretsch does it with their thumbnails.
 
What does this mean?

They do alot of cool stuff, but not these. They are a pretty standard thing these days.

Shifting the markers to the other side above the 12th fret is the other thing I see done sometimes.
 
Got tired enough of doing it the manual (imprecise way) that I did a template for vintage tuners this week.
Wish I had done that sooner...
