Dots that are set on the edge of the fretboard (normally low E side) rather than centered. Godin used to do this. Gretsch does it with their thumbnails.

Shifting the markers to the other side above the 12th fret is the other thing I see done sometimes.

Ah yes now I get it. Yeah could be useful for keeping a minimal look on a wide neck.
