Warmoth Today

I think a generous relative will give Altar a nice shiny schecter or LTD which will keep him happy until he finally has a job, and then he may or may not build a gecko..

I am looking forward to his post in 2016: "Hey Y'all, I'm baaack! remember me? Altar? son of Confederate Wookie?"

Mmm... nice gecko necks.  As always, the neck crew are doing a fine job.  I'd love to see more pictures of these in progress.  :)

And another purpleheart one, too!  Wow.  I've had a few people ask me on TalkBass whether they could get one of their own, after seeing mine.

Whoa... is that the purpleheart wood is actually THAT PURPLE? the showcase photos do not look purple at all. They look reddish at best. I'd be dang shocked to see that in the box on delivery day when what I thought I was buying was red. Maybe the finish shifts the hue? What am I missing?

Wyliee what dept in Warmoth do you work?

Yep, it really looks that purple.  With time you may expect the raw wood to darken a bit, but it's still pretty vivid.  For what it's worth, my purpleheart Gecko neck didn't look quite as purple in its own Showcase picture.

Purpleheart varies a bit. Keep in mind that Purpleheart will oxidize to brown over time, so what you see will not be what you get. The same goes for other woods like Padauk. I've cut into Purpleheart that was an almost pale Rosewood-like brown, and yet other pieces were a bright and vibrant purple. Almost makes you think the wood has been dyed, but yet it's a totally natural color.

I know... each to their own... but that is one color I would never want on a neck. This highlights my bigger beef tho... the white balance of the Warmoth gallery photos. They're way to "warm" or "orangey". Which makes the browns, reds, yellows and oranges look awesome, but it distorts the lower frequency colors like the purples and blues. Even my showcase LP looked super orange in its photo but when it arrived it was really a tan or carmel hue. Still gorgeous, but not what I was expecting from the photo.

I hadn't noticed that, but I'm not a preprocess guy.

Incidentally, the colors toward the violet end of the spectrum are of a higher frequency than those toward the red end.

Even considering oxidation, I am seriously contemplating a Purpleheart neck for my 62 strat replica. I mean, why the hell not? Oh right, I'm broke.

I love the look of purpleheart, but I'm with Suzanne - I can't imagine it on a guitar.

One of my brothers was a big fan of the stuff, and built several small amp cabinets out it. And pot pipes. Maybe he made the pipes first...

The trick to Purpleheart necks is to put them on black or white bodies. Or maybe some other solid color that complements purple.

I for one am glad I never had the chance to buy three quarters of the stuff I had to have as a broke teenager/college student. I'd be sitting here with a Mk III Simulclass combo w extension cab, a bunch of shredder guitars, a 1/2" 8 track, and still be paying on ithe whole sorry mess of hissy  muddy scooped mid fuzziness.

Actually I did get a windfall substantial enough to buy me a car (the only bit of that money not wasted), buy a bunch of toys, and start me off on the road to spending more than you make. The two pieces of musical equipment I still have from that era were  the cheapest _ less than $650 combined for the Zion hardtail strat and the Carvin X60C.

I think that purpleheart looks absolutely fantastic. I'd probably want to get a finish on it to make sure the colour stayed like that. I think a clear gloss would do nicely.

So the old Warmoth Today thread basically died when Gregg left.  Most of the pictures I've been snapping have been going to FB or Twitter.  Some of us were talking in the office and consensus is that it is always fun to show of some of what we're doing.  There's a lot of cool stuff here and we like to show off from time to time...

I hope you will continue posting pics here because not all of us have FB & Twitter profiles. In fact, a sticky thread with frequent updates is a good idea.

I'll second that. I'd rather have herpes-infected hemorrhoids soaked in kerosene and set on fire than a Facebook or Twitter account.

I can understand it with Facebook, but hating Twitter is like hating TV or books. You only look at what you want to.
