In a way this guy got sequentially overlooked = there's only room at the top for one, and Winter just kept bubbling along behind Jim Hendrix, then Duane Allman -> Billy Gibbons, then Stevie Ray. I have his rocking in the 70's video and he's really the only one who can sit down with a dobro and play note-perfect old blues. He had the misfortune to get saddled with a manager who liked heroin as much as Johnny did, and just kept buying it, and buying it, and buying it, rather like the bassist in the Jerry Garcia band.
