1975 Rowing A Boat-neck...

This is my pride and joy 1975 Fender CBS 3-Bolt Sunburst Stratocaster. It has a 4lb. 6oz. Alder Body and a fantastic Warmoth CBS Pro Construction quartersawn flame maple 22 fret neck, boat-neck profile, SS 6105 frets, Indian Rosewood board, 1 11/16” nut width. The fret ends and board edges were radius block rolled together with the roll gradually tapering off in the area of the 14th fret, the remaining fret ends received less work to reserve room for vintage string spacing. The neck was played and tweaked over time with no file leveling. When all was right a vintage tint and several coats of gloss Nitro Lacquer were applied, the neck is non-stick thanks to ultra fine steel wool, buffing, playing, etc. Rolling frets is risky, one slip or too much rolling can ruin a neck and your day. The taller the fret wire the more difficult it is to roll and blend the shoulders. Scrub sanding in the wrong direction can heat and lift the frets ends, etc. Practice on an expendable junker first.

I originally purchased a nice CBS 59 Roundback quartersawn maple/rosewood neck for this build and the day it arrived the CBS Boatneck was in the showcase. Using my copy and paste Warmoth Showcase Photos the 59 headed to eBay and sold within 12 hours due to the wait time for Warmoth Necks at the time. Once the ink was dry on the transaction I grabbed the CBS Boatneck and the rest is history.

The Pro Construction neck is secured to the 3-bolt body with a ProAttach.com Kit. The guitar is also the first 3-Bolt documented to have a side-adjust Pro-Construction neck installed without any body butchering.

The original Sunburst Finish is in the style found mostly on a Fender Jazz Bass where the black is somewhat narrow and the red extends deep into the horns. An old HP camera cannot do it justice.

The time and money consuming build is equipped with a Fender Engine Turned Pickguard. The older Van Zandt Blues Pickups rumored to have once belonged to a guy who played for Rod Stewart (sounds like it) were found online and once the deal was made the seller whose name I lost shipped before I sent the payment! I cannot thank him enough. The Strat also has a 3-way switch, Guenther jack plate, a '62 Fender US hardtail bridge, Vintage Kluson turners, one oddball string tree and GHS Nickel Rockers 10-46.

This guitar is the one in a thousand where everything somehow falls into place. Whenever I build/assemble other guitars this is the one I compete with for tone and playability. These older Fender Alder bodies are worth their weight in gold and combined with an exceptional Warmoth neck and decent US Fender hardware and top shelf electrics they are unbeatable...FullerPlast or no FullerPlast.

The guitar is signed by Ray Hennig who owns Heart of Texas Music in Austin, Tx. Ray is a Texas legend and the man who long ago sold the Strat known as Number 1 or First Wife to SRV. The Custom Sticker (difficult to photo) was acquired from friends of Stevie who reside in Canada. The guitar is also signed by the late Claude King who was a friend and down to earth all around gentleman who will never be forgotten. Also signed by Van Wilks noted by Billy Gibbons as a top 10 player he admires...

Your opening line and your guitar reminded me of SRV. Sweet guitar dude... I bet you could even get his tones pretty nailed with those pups!  :icon_thumright:
