VIP Baritone

Ok, so I scored a SWEEEEEET VIP body from a guy locally for really cheap, (I traded some old gear I wasn't using). The guy said he had won guitar of the month with it here on the forum a while ago, I'll post some pics of the body when I get home tonight, maybe some of you will recognize it and can identify it for me?

ANYWAY, on to why I'm posting this: I sold the neck it had on it already (25.5 warmoth pro construction, standard thin) because I want to put a Warmoth Baritone conversion neck on it.

My question is: would a Maple neck with ebony fretboard be way too bright?  ( the body is a chambered black Korina back with a flame maple carved top) (although I'm wondering if it would be ok since I'm going Baritone with this build anyway) I want Maple for the back because of it's stability, but I want something really dark for the fingerboard to match the body (it's like a sort of Black/amber-burst color on the flame maple)

Any thoughts/suggestions? I'll DEFINITELY get some pics of the body up ASAP!!

I think a Maple neck w/ an Ebony 'board would be a good match not just for Korina, but any baritone scale neck/body combination. The longer scale changes the angular momentum of the neck, so it's going to dampen higher frequencies more than a shorter neck would. By using stiffer woods, I would think you'd mitigate that somewhat and end up with a more even response and perhaps a little more sustain, both of which are a Good Thing. Of course, all of that is relative. Considering that the neck contributes maybe 10% of the characteristic tone of an instrument, changing that by a couple/few points isn't going to make an Earth-shattering difference. You may be able to hear it in isolation, but in the grand scheme of things what you really need is to be comfortable playing.

Man I could have really used that neck. Was it the one with the variax headstock? I hope you scored that guitar. I loved that satin finish. If its the one I'm thinkin it was metalman's guitar. Something like that.

Work has been nuts lately, but I finally got some pics of the VIP body. I'm so stoked I scored this! Can't wait to get some extra $$$ so I can order the neck. I really like the finish on this thing, I have no clue why the guy I got this from was willing to let it go in a trade! ( I traded a LP studio special edition and a Marshall JCM900, and got this VIP (no pickups or hardware, but the wiring harness is still inside) and a 50watt Mesa single recto head, I'm definitely happy with the deal!)

Nice! I'm a big fan of VIPs, and that's a fine example of one.

Thanks! I dig it a lot, I'm leaning towards a baritone neck with an ebony fingerboard (no inlays) I think the ebony fingerboard would go well with this finish, although I'm open to suggestions!  :headbang:

Being black, Ebony goes with everything. But, I think it would be especially sweet with that finish. The "no markers" 'board is a good choice, too. That's a busy top wood, you don't want anything distracting from it.

Nice score man, I like that guitar alot.

I wonder whatever happened to Metalman...I think this guitar was a gift for his anniversary right? Maybe I'm not remembering correctly.

Geez, seems like there's some history with this VIP that I'm not privy to! Haha! If my wife ever got me a guitar (ANY type of guitar) for our anniversary I'd never get rid if it! (haha first I'd probably have to pick my jaw off the floor if she did that!) I dunno if the guy I got this VIP from was this "metalman" dude you guys are referring to, but he's a complete idiot if he got rid of an anniversary present as kick@$$ as this! Haha!! (I'm glad for my sake though!!)

Metalman was the screen name used by the guy who built the guitar. And in thinking about it now, I think he got some silver burst mike mushok (sp?) baritone PRS. So this was just a build he did.

All the same, you win haha.
