It's supposed to look like an engraved japanese beetle - like the one on the front and the one on the bag of sevin dust. Best way to deal with the !@#$@#$

Back 100 years ago, we used to use a Tele bridge/pickup cover to smash out our roaches. But, sometimes they'd get lost in the cigarette butts, so we got a bong.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, for reasons never explained Telecasters came with a cover over the bridge/pickup assembly...

They were not well recieved, for a variety of reasons. But, they did make for a handy ashtray in a pinch...

Right.  I would be talking with Doug about something like this on a neck plate.

Yeah, they did those on basses too.  You guys were just going a bit crazy or something.

Slightly unpopular opinion, but I love the look of those Ashtray covers. I haven't played one before, heck I've only ever played 3 different electric guitars, so I don't really know how they feel to play.

You're right; they don't look bad at all. I don't think anybody ever minded what they looked like. But, they did bad things to the sound, feel and playability of the instrument. If it worked out that you didn't mind that, then the damned things wouldn't stay on so you lost them. So, good or bad, they were a pain in the shorts. That's why you rarely see them any more.

I think Fender puts them on some new basses to this day, but I'm not sure why.  Of course I don't use standard bent plate bridges and kinda want the bridge to be seen.

The one I had stayed on OK but it made the pickup sound muted. Like an opera singer trying to sing with a mouth full of paper towels.

The last time I was anywhere near a Tele that had one of those was so long ago that I don't remember the exact effect on the sound. Wouldn't have registered anyway - the guitar sounded terrible to me no matter what. I could never figure out why anyone would want a Tele in the first place. But, I was a dyed-in-the-wool Gibson man back then. Fender didn't make anything I liked. Today, the only Gibson I have I'd sell in a New York minute.

Fender are not the only ones to put these strange covers above the strings

Never understood it myself. Why limit the access to the strings in certain places? Weird.

I actually love the look of them hahah. Though yeah, it probably does affect play-ability.

**Giveaway update**

It's great to see this thread getting so much heat! 60 or so first-time posters! Big welcome to you all.

This forum is the friendliest, most helpfulest, and funnest guitar-centric place on the whole damn interweb. So... we want you newbies to stay a while, hang out, join in! Just saying, "I'm in it to win it, gimme dat!" doesn't really cut it, so the rules have been updated. I did say there might be more small print to follow, but this is the large print:

*To be eligible for the drawing, you must have a post count of 10 or higher by the time the body is complete.*

If you are caught registering under multiple IP addresses or aliases, or otherwise cheating or gaming the system, you will be disqualified. Don't be a dick.

btw, just repeating your "I'm in it to win it, gimme dat!" post 9 more times won't cut it either!

Back to the fun...

This thread will be crazy long  :toothy12:

Probably true, but, to all the newbs: I don't think the 10 posts have to all be in this thread. Have a look around, maybe check out the gallery and let us know how great our builds are - especially mine.

Spam....  don't think that works either...

The Ric bass cover was originally somewhat functional.  It covered and protected a steel horse shoe pickup that was prone to degaussing.  Just for looks now.
