I just find those Kiesel finishes to look like dirty wood or a poorly done black stain (I think it looks far worse in their colored attempts too). They do ultra-thin "raw" finishes, that look pretty good to me - though they tend to look like they forgot to fill the grain.

I'm glad you said it first. I can't get excited about those, either. It is as you say - just looks like amateur hour or dirty wood.

I think that was the intent....contrast with this.

But if want to do it seriously, it needed much more work and art knowledge than painting something “new and sunny “

Same as making something old, like old wood, “weathering” is also a one-off it kind art of unique craftsmanship of unseen hero behind the scenes.
In Hollywood movie, costumes and props designer and making, done a huge amount of work to make believe that “nothing has done” , you believe it is a natural reality.

I think the TEA/Steel wool had topped my list for some time.  Looks really cool.

The sandblasted swamp ash "doghair" has been around since the early 90's as far as I know. Jackson was one of the first I'd ever seen with that finish, they are extremely rare. I have two without the "highlights", a blue and weathered brown..
