Ugliest build, or the "Total Fail" topic

As a long time stalker working on his second build, I've seen many a perfectly-executed, beautifully finished photogenic instrument on the Warmoth boards.

What I have NOT seen are the Fails.  My current build is tunring out not quite to my liking at this stage and I'll have to make some design decisions.  I think probably for every one outstanding build there are ten others that never appear here.

It struck me that maybe the Fugleys should have some spotlight as well, and maybe we can all learn from the errors.  Just a thought.  I'll have pictures of my ugly-duckling work in progress up soon.

So lets see/hear about them all!!

I'm not sure the "fail:success" ratio is as wide as you think. Perhaps in the finish department... good finishes are not as easy to get as many think, and the cheap or low-talent solutions or inexperienced attempts often reveal themselves pretty obviously. It's tempting to try and save the $250-$500 a good finish will cost by doing it yourself, but there's a reason they cost that much. They're a pain in the shorts labor-wise, or very expensive to get set up for and maintain after the fact. Nobody's getting rich off them. Those that do them well are in it partly for the artistic joy.

Then, there are those who just don't care about appearance. They're only there to get high-quality parts/techniques so they can further their art, which is music. I had a guitar teacher 100 years ago who was one of those. Used a Warmoth body and neck because he wanted the best, so he wouldn't have to fight with it. I think he bolted them together and threw them into a snowbank where he could piss on them for a finish, then twist-tied the wiring together. I mean, you talk about a rag ride. Never even had a case for it, just a gig bag. But, you ought to have heard him on it. Guy was magical.

But, you're right in that it would be interesting to hear about some mistakes, poor planning, unexpected difficulty, etc. that wasn't handled as well as it could have been, etc. People learn from such things, and move forward faster into bigger and better things as a result. That's pretty much why this board is here, I think. Warmoth isn't running ads on it, or forcing anything but civil behavior. It's just a place to share experiences and maintain a community of artists who go a step beyond.

can someone reference the ART MAJOR thread so we can show him what happens when things go wrong? :evil4: :evil4: :evil4: :redflag:

I know the thread you're talking about , but we need some unique keywords. "Art Major" doesn't help at all.

This one's built the wrong way around! Using non USA labour no less.  :icon_jokercolor:

If you're looking for the ugly guitar/fail section it's titled " Tele". You'll find all sorts of things in there. One piece bridge/pickup ring contraptions, mismatched pickups, the list goes on and on. Trust me, it's all in there. :icon_jokercolor:

I'm going to have to go ahead and sort of... agree with you there.

But not too strongly agreeing; sort of a middling agreement neither for or against... feelings may be hurt.

I think you have that all wrong
Teles are what music is all about, nothing sounds like a tele, and tele players would rather fight than switch.

I plain out don't like Telecasters, in any flavor. It is very frustrating to think that everyone I know in guitar land loves them, but I just cannot come to appreciate them. They are too ugly and primitive. Even if you get rid of the foot headstock and the traditional pickups/pickguard/control plate/bridge, I don't like the body shape. :dontknow:

Interestingly enough, I came across this Tele on the Dingwall website that is just so over the top ugly that I love it. :blob7:

Some idiot here even tarted one up and had it wired like a LP with an EMG setup, carved top body and a 3 a side headstock no less!..... Oh wait...

Yes he did! IIRC the guitar even tried to fight completion. No strings, hacked wiring.....but seriously in the end its one of the sexist T-style(I refuse to call it a telecaster)guitars ever made. I still need to make good on my offer :laughing7:

Would have to be "Butch's" green/yellow rising sun monstrosity, but can't find a picture of it anywhere, anybody download that?

Gold hardware and/or Mary Kay finish is a great way for me to think a build has been ruined.  Might as well make it reverse headstock for the whole shebang.

It needs a Floyd, of course.
