So my friend wants me to get him some new, preferably locking tuners for his mini tangle wood lp electric(EE-15, google it!)

I've taken off the tuners and measured the holes-6.3 mm wide and 15.6mm deep.

What fits in them?  ???

Are the stock ones so bad that he really needs this? If they're usable I'd stick with the stock ones.

sounds like binding at the nut

That was my first thought too, plus its a cheap fix.  Does it jump in pitch or make a tinking sounds as you tune it?  How much of the string is buried in the nut?

As far as replacements, the closest option I can find is these, but they're still a hair larger than the existing holes.

With a tuner hole that small (1/4 inch) you'll have to enlarge them to make a decent set of tuners fit.

IMHO..he should put the cash toward another guitar.  Plus that guitar is 3/4 scale....he'll want a full sized axe eventually.

The hole has a tiny metal sleeve in it from the other tuners, which i can remove, i measured it with the sleeve in.

Are these tuners any good? they look exactally the same as the ones on the tanglewood.

My friend is 17 and he has 2 electrics already, he bought this when he went to the UK for 60 pounds.

Buy some "guitar grease" from stew machttp://www.stewmac.com/shop/Nuts,_saddles/Tools_and_supplies:_String_slot_lubricant.html  or anywhere for $5, put that in the nut slots, see if it takes care of the problem. If not, get a pre-cut nut from stew mac http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Nuts,_saddles/String_nuts/1/Graph_Tech_Nuts/Pictures.html#details.

When tuners are bad, they have free play in the knobs - you can tell because you'll turn the knobs back and forth a hair, and the post won't move. You definitely have binding in the nut, not bad tuners (though your tuners may be mediocre).

A good friend of mine taught me an even cheaper trick.  I am sure that somebody here will scream at me and tell me this is all wrong and will destroy my guitar in fifty years, but I don't care, it works and I see no adverse effects.  here it is, you ready???  Take a graphite pencil and run it over the nut slots a couple times, each time you change strings.  That's it.  Like I said, it works!

I've done this lots of times - works very well.

Hehehe.

The tuners are definetly bad they just don't turn properly or hold tune so i know there is something wrong with them, so i want them changed, but the economy tuners don't come in black.  :(

I'll look at the nut, but I don't think thats it.
