Cagey, you've inspired me.  I'm still not completely sold on it, but here is the latest mock up....

This latest mockup, sans-pickguard, is the one I would most definitely go with.  With a beautiful finish like that, it leaves me perplexed as to why you would even think about covering it...  :icon_scratch:

No, I went back and forth andfinally decided to go woth out and if I ended up wearing through the finish that I could put one on later.  As it is, it will remain pick guard free.  I also decided to nix the block inlays and just go with a flame maple fretboard.  You can see the finished product here:
