I'm about half way through an oil finish on my mahogany body.  What I want is a satin finish, but so far with every new coat of tru-oil I put on it is getting shinier and shinier. If I was after a high gloss finish - this would be great, but I'm not! This is what I have done so far:

4 Coats of Birchwood Casey Sealer & Grain filler (sanded with 400 grit in-between each)
3 coats of Tru-oil so far (sanded with 600 then 1000 grit in-between each coat)

I was then intending to use 0000 steel wool to try and give it a stain finish.

My question is what should I do next - a few more coats of tru , then scuff it up with steel wool.  Should I then wax it??

Any advice for a good satin finish would be appreciated - thanks

Get one (or two) of those white scotch brite pads.  Those are the really fine ones.  Slowly go along the grain with them.

You've ruined it. Just send it to me and I'll see if I can salvage it. If not I'll dispose of it for free.  :icon_biggrin:

Not a bad case with your finish.  Just stop adding layers.  Put your parts on and start using it.  The tru oil is a gunstock finish and will fade in a few months with use.  With strumming, ripping cool licks and chords, will wear the finish, fast.  Play morning and night, and at lunch too.  Keep it in the trunk of your car.  Then, when its too dull, you can build up again to the level of sheen you want.  Enjoy... looks good to me.

Oil finishes aren't particularly robust, so old age and treachery alone will grunge it up for you to something resembling a rough satin. If you can't wait for natural wear and tear, the scotchbright suggestion will work, but be aware that all satin finishes develop shiny spots anyway so you may want to learn to love an inconsistent finish. It's one of the reasons I've never got into doing oil. No matter what you want, it won't last. Gloss will get marred and satin will get shiny, and both in less time than you'd like.

Thanks for the replies guys - a decent mix of both helpful and humorous!

The scotch brite pads seems to have done the trick - I've lightly ruffed it and it looks really great now.  Exactly the finish I was looking for.
