Toggle switch won't fit VIP

I picked up a VIP (non-recessed controls) during the sale.  I ordered my electronics from my local guitar shop (it's mostly AllParts stuff).  When test fitting the toggle switch, I noticed that the thread do not extend far enough thread the knurled nut.  I've included a pic of what I am trying to describe below.

I looked at the switches on the Warmoth site but they don't appear any longer than mine.  I called and asked Warmoth what they recommended solution is and the fellow I spoke to said that I should try countersinking the hole on the inside using a drill press.  While I can certainly try this, I thought I might ask the good folks here on the board what others have done.  This type of wood removal seems drastic - maybe there is a better solution?

I have had this on a lam top LP. 

It is hard to tell from the photo but it looks like the thread are just about flush withthe top of the wood.

Here is what I have done:

--Make sure any tabs are removed from the toggle. 
--Are there any washers on the underside that can be removed?
--I have used a small blade to gently remove material from the underside.  Just enough to get the threads exposed.  I would not countersink with a drill unless you are a very good at it.

when removed material, I placed the blade thru the hole on an angle from the underside and gently removed material by running the blade around the the edge of the hole.  Almost creating a beveled edge.  Test for fit and repeat.  All you need is a good  quality pocket knife with a sharp rigid blade.

DONT remove wood.

There is a recessed ring, used on all carved top Les Pauls, that fits all the AMERICAN made switches.

They're on ebay or at guitarelectronics.com

All Gibson's use the recessed rings... and they work GREAT

Thanks Dave - you are a lot braver than me... the thread is flush with the top of the wood without any of the washers, nuts and tabs (just what are those tabs there for anyway?)

I'm going to try to pursue CB's recessed rings before I gouge up my cavity.

Thats the one.

It fits USA switches, and you'll need to slightly enlarge the hole's diameter
