Here downunder (Australia) they have just released a "The Great Australian Song Book'
With 40 songs on 2 Cd's with a 90 page journal on stories & details of those on it.
(Think it's on i-Tunes etc)

OK …. There are just way to many great Aussie songs to put on 2 cd.'s.  :icon_biggrin:
(Cover art done by Rolf Harris)
Here's the set list ….
http://shop.abc.net.au/products/the-great-australian-songbook-premium-edition
I personally can see about 8 - 10 that I wouldn't have on there. (I am older enough to know all these songs too)
But saying that, there are some bloody classic's on it.  :icon_thumright:
The funniest part is it was put together by a New Zealander.  :sad1:
The main controversial bit is most probably going to be that AC/DC isn't on it.
But … I'm sure they have yearned enough anyway.
No Angles, No Tommy Emmanuel & can think of many more.

Here's a clip about it.

The pot has been stirred  :cool01:  Downunder

This will sure be a talking point down at the Local (Pub)

Wow, CD 2 kind of dropped the ball (except for Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, of course). Other than that, a very cool collection.

Well spotted .... CD 1 is the 1960's, 70's, 80's, 90's
Where CD2 is from 2000 & on.

No wonder I like my early years  :icon_biggrin: the 60's, 70's & 80's where just fabulous. And not just downunder !!

??? There is just no excuse for Tommy Emmanuel not making the list IMHO.
I don't see Colin Hay on there either, but I guess an arguement could be that he's a Scot.

Maybe AC/DC get the Scot exemption too, though I'd bet most think of them as Australian.  I don't think of Van Halen as being Dutch, though Alex and Eddie are.  Usually it's where you grew up, and not birthplace, that determine where one is from.  That maybe an American thing though, and why we want to give back Mel Gibson (American by birth).

Informative list at any rate.  I had no idea Nick Cave, Jet, Wolf Mother, and Kylie Minogue were from down under.

Oh - I miss INXS  :sad1: (they are in the book - I just miss them in their Michael Hutchence area line up - great band).

Icehouse was great too.

Ummm  you mean Colin Hayes who was the lead singer in 'Men at Work' there on it.

Yep Kylie is ours (get ya hands off her  :icon_biggrin: ) plus (those others are too) she went out with Michael Hutchence (INXS) for a while.

Yep I'd have Hoodoo Gurus on there / The Saints / Jo Jo Zep / The Sunny Boys / The Models / Kevin Borich etc etc

Yep totally agree to this ….  :icon_thumright:  Icehouse still are.

Icehouse started off being called 'Flowers' but had to change as I think there was a USA Flowers.
Seen many many a time.

INXS …. well I've got many a story on them … this is the very short one.

I had the privilege of having both Michael Hutchence & Andrew Farris at my 21st in 1981.  :icon_biggrin:
Got to know all the members.
Followed this band from the days known as 'The Farris Brothers' from about gig #3
We use to pay just 50cents to see them at Avolon RSL (Sydney Northern Beaches) in the later 70's

It all started from ….
Blackouts my mate also on here, had John Farris 16 yo (Drummer) working in his record shop in the middle of Sydney.
One day coming home from Tech Collage I dropped into the shop (as I always did) & John said that he was in a band,
why don't ya both come & check us out. So we both did that night …….. and WOW.

Both said on the way home that these guys we're great. Plus that they had a big future ahead of them.
Those days they did covers & some of there own stuff.
Some cover's we're ….
Watching the detectives … Elvis Costello
Hey Lord don'y ask me Q's …Graham Parker
Satisfaction … Stones
You really got me …. going into …. Miss Shapiro  ….. 801 version
Some Brain Ferry, The Tubes, The Clash etc etc

Followed these guys all around Sydney & up & down the coast for years & years, lost count how many times we saw them.
Sometimes 3 - 4 times a week. Sometimes twice in one night.

Use to go back to there place after some gigs ….. party party party !!

It is a clever name they went with. Which came from one of the band members from Midnight Oil
As a Rhythm band they we're TIGHT as.
As a live band just superb !!

One time Blackouts & I went into the middle of Sydney & as we we're paying to get in, we could here them playing already
Thought OH Crap …. we're missing the show.
Well we rushed upstairs & us two we're the only ones in there (besides the barmaids)
We got the … Hi guys what song do ya want us to play for ya.
We yelled out some & they obliged, as the place slowly filled up.

It's sad that AC/DC could get a new singer & still continue on (I still prefer Bon Scott).
Where as INXS can't do the same.
There now trying ….. Ciaran Gribbin singer / songwritter

To many stories to tell !!  :icon_biggrin:

RIP Michael Hutchence …. 22nd Nov 1997

I remember hearing Daddy Cool's song Eagle Rock for the first time at a reception/dance held after a meeting I attended in Melbourne played by a cover band. Great song. The audience went nuts.

I'm pretty sure the Bee Gee's are British though having spent a lot of time growing up in Australia, maybe that disqualifies them?

I'm not sure anybody'll own up to the Bee Gee's.

"No, mate - they're yours!..."
"Auf wiedersehen!!!"
"Blorf, Blorf...."

I'm pleasantly surprised to see The Living End make the cut.

Would've like to see Kings of the Sun make it too, but I can understand why they didn't!

No Bee-Gees or Andy Gibb either.

I think the Isle of Man holds the claim on the Gibb family. I just read recently that Robin has had some serious health issues with liver cancer.

I was honestly suprised that bands like AC/DC, Rose Tattoo (and Angry Anderson's solo career) and John Williamson weren't on the list.

Uh, no AC/DC?  :icon_scratch:

Looks like the equivalent of a "Best Guitarists of All Time" record and Randy Rhoads or Eddie Van Halen not being included on it...  :tard:

I'm a closet Bee-Gees fan.  Disco beat aside, original songs, tightness, vocal harmonies.  Disco was their only crime.

I don't even have an .mp3 of anything they've done, for fear of ostracism. But, you're right. They were original and highly talented. Even the disco wasn't that bad. But, you probably have to give more credit to their producer than them for that. He's the guy that used them as an instrument to make money. I'm not sure they could have pulled off what they did otherwise.

Of course, that's almost always the case. It's difficult to pull anything major off on your own. You always need some help. If nothing else, you need somebody to tell you when you suck and when you're kicking ass, independent of what you think yourself. You're too close and too invested, so you can't know.

They weren't all studio.  The live performances are what impressed me most.  However, it's safe to say their live performances were the studio arrangements.  The old legal saying, "If you choose to represent yourself, you have a fool for a client" translates well to the music world of producing yourself.  What would our favorite bands sound like without Tom Dowd, George Martin, Quincy Jones, Rick Ruben, Mutt Lange, Bob Rock, etc., etc.?
