The "Questions Too Stupid To Deserve Their Own thread" Thread.

It turns out that I am an idiot... as usual!

the capacitor was touching the top of the pot on both sides!!!!!  :tard: :tard: :tard: pulled it off a little and it is working perfect!!!
thanks for the help though...

i had a similar problem with my tele deluxe. sometimes the tone would work, sometimes it wouldn't! seemed to depend on how i held the guitar. finally figured out what the problem was, but it really sucked since you have to take the neck off of a 22 fret tele deluxe to get the pickguard off... anyway i ended up just putting a piece of electrical tape over the whole capacitor so it literally couldn't make contact with anything no matter how awkwardly it was sitting. if it happens again i'd just tape it off. hasn't been a problem since!

What are the tricks to sounding like David Gilmour?
first you have to learn the accent, then you try to match the  way his  voice kinda flows out, I think it is a breathing pattern, next you match his tone, everyone speaks in a different key. That should get you close

LMAO

okay... now... ON GUITAR.

he's got some immense clean tones.
sorry, I had to, it was to much of a temptation

His clean tone, wow, I do not know, when I really want clean, I start with playing through a bass amp. then analyze what effects are being used, like chorus reverb, delay or such. Never tried to match Gilmore's clean tone as Never played his stuff on stage. Actually, I do not try to match to many tones anymore, I have about 4 tones I use, it is hard enough just with those. I know of circuit players who try to match each song, what a pain. But then onstage it is all about just banging the song out, at home is luxury as you can afford to tweak stuff, no drunks want the next dance tune.

I don't need to tone hound copy him... there are just these glassy, electric sounds on Metallic Spheres.

I think a lot of its done on lap steel.

but I have no idea where to start with going for that sound...

I imagine owning a slide or two is a good start?

You mean besides going to Cambridge College of Arts and Technology, having a fertile imagination and 45+ years of practice with professional musicians? I don't know. Maybe he's just lucky? <grin>

AGWAN, lets do this one step at a time,  Simmer,? like plate reverb? slide, go grab a bottle and try that. what modulation is he using,? Chorus?  close the eyes and analyze it.

On one side it shouldn't matter because one end of the thing is going to ground, which the back of the pot should be.  When I install them myself, I usually run a piece of stripped insulation over the ungrounded end to prevent incidental contact.

Dude... I'm a pretty crap guitarist... thus why this is a stupid Question...

I just, realized that of all the clean guitar tones I've ever heard... he's the only player I know of that can fascinate me with what seems to be a single clean note.

the basics of his set ups. hardware... that give the roots of that sound... is what makes me curious!

I don't really know what Simmer and Plate Reverb are... I'm JUST getting into this.

great then your head is open for much knowledge to be poured in, ok reverb comes in about 3 forms, spring, you know how that sounds, natural, or the effect of a large room, and Plate or stdio, they used a huge plate instead of springs, it is a hauntingly simmer effect. I suggest you go and find some sound bytes of reverbs and listen to them, and see if that is part of the sound. I really am trying to help. the more you train that ear, the better off you will be.and the longer you will stay with it.

Oooooohkay. so thats a plate reverb.

wow.

I'm thinking the nearest I'll get to that, is a Reverb pedal that can simulate a bit of plate... like the Dr Scientist RRR (supposedly)

I really can't figure out how an authentic plate reverb works live...

I have a plate reverb simulator in m Vox, I love plate. use it over the Fender 15 I have all the time, but then I am, after this build, bout to build my first amp, I am going to build a Allen Amp Chihuahua but with a twist, I am going make mine stereo and if the Idea works, I am going to step it up and do the first Vox 30 watt top boost in stereo ending up with a 60 watt head with the AC30tb sound, going into 2 Vox stereo 4/12 cabinets. At that point I will make my own plate reverb unit to sit behind my amp and use the effects loop to run it.
