I have a stupid question: If I were to paint a guitar with, say, automotive paint, do I need anything other than wood primer, base coat paint, the top coat paint, and a clear top coat? Or is it more complicated than that?

I painted cars, bikes, motorcycles and guitars from 8-25 years old. You can even use URO (or 2k, epoxy) automotive primer if you want. Auto paints work no problem..just be careful your base/sealer and/or primer is completely cured before refinish if your gonna bake it in the spraybooth..I had one bubble up pretty bad and I had to strip it clean and start all over.  :tard:

Here's my stupid question: Why don't people finish necks like they do bodies? I see flame maple necks, but nobody seems to dye them the way they do flame maple bodies. Is a different species of Maple used in the neck? Or is it just too expensive?

I saw a guy with a dyed neck once, looked really out of place.
I think it is a matter of what we consider normal, we accept dark neck because of the rosewood fretboards, so now we accept the dark woods having grains and like that, but the light woods not being the norm may take a while to grow on the public. I think that there would be noting wrong with it but you may find you are years ahead of your time with the idea. Who knows if you go ahead in 20 years it may be the norm.

how far in do you center the holes for the tuners ?

and as long as I am at it, has anyone made a arrowhead for a tele that looks like the prototype and what are those measurements of the head ?

The tuners themselves sorta dictate that, and doing a quick check here on both my acoustic and a Strat, it looks like the centerline offset from the edge of the headstock needs to be .500" regardless of orientation. These are sets of Grovers and Schallers, one 3x3, the other 6 in line. Other tuners may differ, but probably not by much.

It's not a good idea, but I've done it. You need to mask things well, and be prepared to accept some edge chipping. But, often the edges are going to be concealed so it's not a big deal. The greater concern is the router base marking up the surrounding finish, as it has a much larger footprint that generally won't be covered up later if it marks something.

Why does the neck builder tell me a neck has to be Maple to be Wizard Contour?

Why wont Mahogany or Wenge work?

Dunno. It just let me build a wenge neck with a Wizard profile, but it won't do mahogany. Maybe that contour is too thin for that wood. It's not too far off the others at the first fret, but at the 12th there's a substantial difference.

what did you build it on?

I'm trying it on the Jackson headstock... I don't see why headstocks should make a difference...

Maybe they're getting Low on Wenge neck blanks... jackson Warmoth Pro in Wizard is maple only...

actually it says that neck only comes in Maple or mahogany, but mahogany wont take Wizard contours.

this is more a declarative statement than a question. but since its plenty stupid and coming from me. I'm going to put it in this thread.

the neck joint thing is driving me nuts.

I've messed with enough guitars by now to know the standard Neck joint is a little to cumbersome for me.

I also know that the Contoured Option puts it down to a place I can live with.

BUT

I don't mind Neck plates. I DO mind how poorly screws sit in the plates of Contoured Necks.

recessed ferrules and threaded inserts would fix that.

BUT

then I would MUCH rather prefer a painted body and neck. over taking the time and money to do it amateurly

but the clamping and drilling are VERY LIKELY to damage the paint.

For my first build, I want it done fast. I want as few steps as possible.
