Kiss is horrible. If you want dumb rock listen to AC/DC.
Ya know, we can sit here and bash on all kinds of bands, all day long, for one reason or another, but damn!!!
You gotta look at what these types of band are/were. They are entertainment. Pure and simple. AC/DC is as classic blues based rock as you can get, plain and simple. And you know what, that's by design. And at times, when I want to hear bare bones good old fashioned classic rock and roll, they are one of them. And they do it very well. Check out AC/DC live at Donnington, it's one the best live classic rock shows. Is it Rush, King Crimson, Dream Theater, etc,? No, but damn, it sure is good in it's own respect. Puts a smile on my face every time I watch it. :headbang:
So before we try to "grade" all the bands out there, we should take them all with a grain of "entertainment" salt. :icon_thumright:
+1. Great comments. Tends to go along with the way I think about all this too.
It's probably an argument over product vs. art, show vs. performance etc.... I guess if you go too far in being a 'show' (said in Ed Sullivan voice), then you end up with singers using lip syncing for most of a shooooooow because they feel it';s more necessary to do the more complex and physically demanding dance moves than stand and sing them with some breath (hello Britney). But if you just concentrate on the performance of music, you run the risk of over indulgence and being boring.
Then when you get into KISS territory, you are looking at a monster stage and effects, so obviously things like sound and playing comfort are compromised. But if you go to KISS show, you want a SHOW. Same applies to Britney or Madonna I guess. It's a show baby, let us entertain you.
But if you go to an AC/DC show, sure there's some visual effects but it is mostly the music, played very loudly, that gets you in. If you don't get off your feet and mosh with the crowd, the music will physically do it for you anyway - it's that loud! :evil4:
Personally, I cannot appreciate the prog rock stuff but that is maybe because I have always struggled with my own technical ability in music, and I may resent these brilliant musos doing what they do. And the fact that during the 70s the concept album and neo classical structure etc. was done to death and my own friends were quite influenced by it and I HAD to listen to it more than I wanted to.
I've seen Pink Floyd and been knocked over by the visuals of the show, been to a Beach Boys show and had a ball of a time in the pouring rain too (even though I should have been miserable, go figure). Seen some serious music in my time, but I generally know what to expect when I go to shows and open my mind to accept what the gig is. Hell, I was even able to appreciate Neil Young's Greendale show (one acoustic number brought the Entertainment Centre onto it's feet, magic).
But please, don't try to tell me that one act is better than the other, it's an impossible comparison. Obvioulsy, acts like KISS are good acts, they wouldn;t have sold all those albums and sold out shows if they weren't
good . While good PR and hype and get you noticed, if you are not good enough to convince punter you are the real deal in what you stand for, or where you are at, your longevity is under threat. Just ask the people who brought us Milli Vanilli.
