16, and im saying that when it comes to prog more people know about rush than yes or king crimson (i love both by the way). that makes THEM pioneers because they successfully made prog synonymous with them in the mainstream.

Maybe in Canada.. but not the rest of the world.
oh and by the time they released their first album, yes already released Fragile, Close to the edge, Tales from Topographic Oceans and Relayer..
Those are pretty much the most legendary records in the history of prog rock !!

in my generation its all about rush.

I think you hit on the problem right there...
Most of us on the forum are not 12 y.o.  Because they were the hot stuff of your generation, it does not make them the legends of all time.
However, I am glad they rock your boat and hope they continue to do so.

I'm sorry, but even with all the makeup and the theatrics, Kiss would not have been as huge as they were (are?) if their music was total garbage. Are their lyrics witty, deep, or introspective? No. Is their music fresh and innovative? Not exactly? Did they take bold stylistic leaps and continually reinvent themselves to remain relevent? Hardly. But can they write a fun, hooky, dare-I-say anthemic 3-minute rock song to make you get up and shout/dance/pump your fists? Absolutely. And that is what their all about. It's rock n' roll, not rocket science.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they're the worst band in history.  They can be quite fun at times.  But to suggest they are extremely important to the history of rock... like The Beatles, Elvis, or Led Zeppelin important, is just ridiculous.

I think your all missing the point, this isn't about KISS,    This is about the need for an Ignore button  ie.......  jerryJG  No Offense there dude

Fair enough. I can live with that.  :laughing7:

yes, for all of you that want an ignore button that fell into Jerry's sand trap...... :sad: it really is your resposibility to ignore a post and move on if that is what you want to do.

Jerry,  :headbang1: rock on dude

Brian

No kidding.  JerryJG, Klaunch, and Kreig hvae made this forum as interesting to me as Star bodies, Floyds on Teles, and Futurama paint jobs.  I love it all.

It would be better to have an internal ignore button... one for that little voice inside that says "This crazy notion would make an AWESOME thread."  :icon_jokercolor:

Seriously though, I prefer threads like this far over the mean spirited political insanity that used to come up constantly.

Kiss is horrible. If you want dumb rock listen to AC/DC.

:doh:

Ya know, we can sit here and bash on all kinds of bands, all day long, for one reason or another, but damn!!!

You gotta look at what these types of band are/were. They are entertainment. Pure and simple. AC/DC is as classic blues based rock as you can get, plain and simple. And you know what, that's by design. And at times, when I want to hear bare bones good old fashioned classic rock and roll, they are one of them. And they do it very well. Check out AC/DC live at Donnington, it's one the best live classic rock shows. Is it Rush, King Crimson, Dream Theater, etc,? No, but damn, it sure is good in it's own respect. Puts a smile on my face every time I watch it.  :headbang:

So before we try to "grade" all the bands out there, we should take them all with a grain of "entertainment" salt.  :icon_thumright:

+1. Great comments. Tends to go along with the way I think about all this too.

It's probably an argument over product vs. art, show vs. performance etc.... I guess if you go too far in being a 'show' (said in Ed Sullivan voice), then you end up with singers using lip syncing for most of a shooooooow because they feel it';s more necessary to do the more complex and physically demanding dance moves than stand and sing them with some breath (hello Britney). But if you just concentrate on the performance of music, you run the risk of over indulgence and being boring.

Then when you get into KISS territory, you are looking at a monster stage and effects, so obviously things like sound and playing comfort are compromised. But if you go to KISS show, you want a SHOW. Same applies to Britney or Madonna I guess. It's a show baby, let us entertain you.

But if you go to an AC/DC show, sure there's some visual effects but it is mostly the music, played very loudly, that gets you in. If you don't get off your feet and mosh with the crowd, the music will physically do it for you anyway - it's that loud! :evil4:

Personally, I cannot appreciate the prog rock stuff but that is maybe because I have always struggled with my own technical ability in music, and I may resent these brilliant musos doing what they do. And the fact that during the 70s the concept album and neo classical structure etc. was done to death and my own friends were quite influenced by it and I HAD to listen to it more than I wanted to. :sad:

I've seen Pink Floyd and been knocked over by the visuals of the show, been to a Beach Boys show and had a ball of a time in the pouring rain too (even though I should have been miserable, go figure). Seen some serious music in my time, but I generally know what to expect when I go to shows and open my mind to accept what the gig is. Hell, I was even able to appreciate Neil Young's Greendale show (one acoustic number brought the Entertainment Centre onto it's feet, magic).

But please, don't try to tell me that one act is better than the other, it's an impossible comparison. Obvioulsy, acts like KISS are good acts, they wouldn;t have sold all those albums and sold out shows if they weren't good . While good PR and hype and get you noticed, if you are not good enough to convince punter you are the real deal in what you stand for, or where you are at, your longevity is under threat. Just ask the people who brought us Milli Vanilli.

Okay, this serves as my offcial goodbye, The moderaters here are going to need to get rid of me, and not without my blessing. In my estimation, I don't ever want to belong to a forum with teenagers again. You can admire them ,and try to converse with them on a freiendly level, but in the end they simply do not posess the wherewithall to discourse on a reasonable adult level. Theres was this one teen kid form Adelaide Australia  on another forum who was exceptionally hip, but still, in general, I'd like to see an age limit on forums of 18.
Anyhow, I want to say goodbye, and much respect, execpt to a few total doucebags like Tfarney, who just had his anal retentiveness so far stuck up his supposed "Know it all " arse that it aint even funny.All he could do was attack me for being more than he could ever try an be, and I guess he was somehow stunned or jealous or jusyta dick i guess.
As far as the few others  who were vicious towards me, in everything i ever said or did, well, you know who you are, and heres what i have to say to you;
this is mine;

Does anyone else find it strange that the person that makes the biggest fool of himself thinks there should be limits on others so they have something useful to add?

WOW!  I happen to like the younger crowd here, I think they are smart wellspoken and have great thoughts, input and sense of humor.
