The official KISS Thread

I'm 24 and I love KISS. Seriously, adore them; saw them on the Plains of Abraham this summer and it was amazing.  The theatrics are an integral part of the KISS, every bit as important as the music. The makeup, the stage show, the fireworks, the tongue are a huge part of what make KISS KISS (regardless of who's on stage). That being said, they are NOT the most influential American rock band of all time. It has become painfully obvious in recent years that KISS is little more than a money-making operation (even more so than it used to be). The corporatization of KISS leaves a sour taste in my mouth too. But that won't stop me (nor should it anyone) from enjoying what is, in effect, really good rock n' roll music.

Very simply the "creators" of styles, using influences from those before them of course:

Pop - Elvis and the Beattles

Classic Rock - Led Zepplin

Metal - Black Sabbath

Main Stream Blues - Jimi Hendrix, SRV, Eric Clapton

Thinking Man/Woman's Artsy Music - Pink Floyd

Glam - New York Dolls, David Bowie, KISS

Progressive - Rush

DBU,

Rush? What about King Crimson or Yes?

Brian
Both great bands, but Rush to me was the first to really step out as a progressive band. Remember when 2112 came out?  How about A Farewell to Kings or Hemispheres?

Yes and King Crimson seemed a little too Pop and eccentric for me.

+1.  Those guys are way more influential to me than KISS.

KISS basically taught me that you could get away without being able to sing or play if you had the right makeup and knew how to handle flashpots.  :icon_biggrin:

Seriously Jerry you are very clever or something - people on here just keep on bothering to argue with you, your pointless posts never get treated like the drunken prank-calls-with-a-keyboard they really are.

Actually though, for a brief period of time, between 12 1/2 and 13 years old, I totally agreed with you.

That is crazy, I really like Rush (except I can't listen for too long at a time to Geddy's voice)
but they sound waaaaay more mainstream rock-ish to me than Yes or King Crimson

I also think that the individual members of per example Yes are waaaaay more talented than Rush

LOL, which one of us is that direct at?!?!?!

ALL of you, and '50's/'60's music as well; whom  y'all think "started" this or that genre of music, or whom influenced whom borders on the comical...

Kiss is not even a band, it's a marketing machine that does a better job of selling action figures than making anything approaching music,

Oh please do tell us, "oh keeper of the key", what and whoM do you think started what???  :icon_jokercolor:

16, and im saying that when it comes to prog more people know about rush than yes or king crimson (i love both by the way). that makes THEM pioneers because they successfully made prog synonymous with them in the mainstream.

Exactly.  They taught everyone how to paint their faces to look like Nacho Libre while playing uninteresting 3 chord blues rock and get kids to buy lunch boxes with their picture, but they certainly didn't invent American music.

Thank you...  :eek:ccasion14:
These guys were nothing more than comic book characters with guitars.  To think they were the pioneers of anything positive is absurd!

OK, OK, OK,... let's be honest. Yes, KISS was a marketing goldmine. And yes they are/were over exposed and way beyond sold out, but to say that in their entire careers they never wrote anything worth while is a big stretch and really not true.

Are they Berkley or GIT graduates? NO, but we've all seen and heard bands that were much worse get air play and sell loads of records.

I'm sorry, but even with all the makeup and the theatrics, Kiss would not have been as huge as they were (are?) if their music was total garbage. Are their lyrics witty, deep, or introspective? No. Is their music fresh and innovative? Not exactly? Did they take bold stylistic leaps and continually reinvent themselves to remain relevent? Hardly. But can they write a fun, hooky, dare-I-say anthemic 3-minute rock song to make you get up and shout/dance/pump your fists? Absolutely. And that is what their all about. It's rock n' roll, not rocket science.
