The new Fender offsets

I went into a music store on my way home and found that they had received their shipment of the new Fender offset guitars, ie the Mustang's and the Duo-sonic's.
And I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. Gone are the useless tremolo, crappy bridge and cumbersome slide switches.
You now got some very cool guitars - especially if you're in the market for a slightly shorter scale guitar - that plays beautifully.
I tried the surf green Duo-Sonic HS (it's ever so slightly metallic) and I loved it. What I noticed about these new Fender models is that they differ from Warmoth Mustang bodies in that the Fender's don't have a tummy cut. So now that I know how good they can be, I'll be sure to order a Warmoth Mustang sometime in the future. (Gotta get my 7/8 Tele ready first :laughing7:).

Some pictures if you haven't seen them on forums, Twitter and elsewhere:

I like the Duo Sonic!

Right?

And I saw now that I looked at the two images, that the body shapes are not quite the same. In fact I think the Duo Sonic shape is a little ... I don't know ... more cool.

If the two photos are accurate, the Duo Sonic has a slightly more rounded back end. That could be accounted for with poorly cropped images, however. It also has a much nicer pickguard shape. I like 'em. Maybe that will go to the bottom of my to-build list, (after a handful of others).  :icon_biggrin:

I think it's the pickguard and the control plate that are cooling it up.

Absolutely and I dig the rounded pickguard! Perhaps it is just me but I find myself longing for a 'long-scale jag / mustang' and by that what I really mean is a jazzmaster with P90s and the cool chrome control plates built in.

This was the personal dilemma I was working through when the purple turtle took away my spending money. So the mustang comes pretty close.

The more and more I see offsets, I want them. I quite like the look of these models though, especially that Blue HS Duo-Sonic. I just looked them up and a site in Australia has it on sale for 850 AUD. Only around 200 more than a Squier VM Jazzmaster. Oh the temptation, I shouldn't...

$850 AUD? Seems high. They're made in Mexico so they're only $499 here in the states, which is $649 AUD, although I don't know what you'd have to pay for taxes, shipping, etc.

Or $155 for a Warmoth body: http://www.warmoth.com/Showcase/ShowcaseItem.aspx?Body=2&Shape=18&Path=Mustang&i=MU165#.WAd6aiTKanY

$215 for a Warmoth Mustang neck: http://www.warmoth.com/Showcase/ShowcaseNeck.aspx?Body=1&Shape=33&Path=Mustang&i=MJN835#.WAd6qyTKanY

and then you could add the hardware further on in time. Would give you an even better guitar!  :icon_thumright:

Tax is minimal - 10% on everything (edit: and always included in the advertised price). The main factor is the "Up yours, Australia" premium that just about every international company charges us. Particularly effective when coupled with the "Where else you gonna go?" export restrictions they apply to vendors in markets where the same product is available cheaper (ie everywhere).

I wish Warmoth would add a Mustang Bass body to the selection short scale bass'  :toothy11:
