Swamp Ash JBass Blue Dye Project

Because of your bass and CB's tele, I think that the next one I build is going to be ash.  That enhanced grain is just addictive to look at...

Note: One of the reasons this was such a pain in the ass to get the color right on is that the cool grain on the front of the bass is a laminate top. As is usually always the story, the top absorbs dye more darkly than the rest of the body (or vice-versa), so if I do something else like this again I'll look for nice grain in a one or two piece ash body without the lamtop.

I was figuring on getting a one piece body and gambling on it having an interesting pattern.  I just am really liking the grain like that.  I suppose if I had the finances I'd be snatching up the bocote necks as well, but I can settle for the ash bodies.  They are a little more in my league price wise.

Sometimes a bookmatched 2 piece body has better looking grain than a 1 piece for this sort of a finish; usually a lot of choices in the Showcase. This Tele body is just begging for the same treatment:

This is really soaking the clear filler up. I think I'm going to do one more fill and leave any residual graining to make the enhanced grain lines more prominent.

Starting to apply shine.....

Ordered the ebony/birdseye Jbass neck pictured below today; when Spike pulled it he said it had some nice flaming on it as well that doesn't show up in the Showcase pics very well, can't wait to see it in person....

Just got the custom MM4 pickup in from Rio Grande; this thing is massive, actually a Powerbucker built on an MM4 mount; I'm wiring it up to an SD STC3M4 active preamp; I'm thinking the combo may be capable of massive destruction.

That is interesting, Jack.  Does the MM4 come with a cover?

Nope; What you see is what you get; output is 16K, Alnico V magnets, and it has the same coil output wiring as a typical MM4 pickup; they don't even have a picture of it on the Rio Grande website, it's only listed in the "Specs" section and you have to custom order. $154, I got mine 8 days after I ordered it.

When I get it done I'm going to get Krista to test it out: http://www.myspace.com/moire; might wind up being the ultimate metal bass... Do they make 4x18 cabinets?

LOL, you could always stack four 8Ohm 1x18s together and drive 'em with two power amps!  Sounds like suicide by SPL to me.

Forgot to post this; see flaming in the 5A birdseye/ebony neck; out getting it's laser logo cut this week.
