Swamp Ash JBass Blue Dye Project

DISTURBING DEVELOPMENT!  :icon_scratch: ???

The body is developing a crack along one of the join lines (3 piece back, laminate top):

Jbasscrack.jpg

I've never had anything like this happen before, in sequence:

1.) Bleached body with Liberon 1 step wood bleach.
2.) 3 days later applied Blue dye concentrate diluted in lacquer thinner
3.) 3 days later, applied Jasco oil based filler.
4.) Body has been hanging outside during day, inside at night for last 2 days, just noticed crack developing a few minutes ago.

Any idea on how to fix this? If I just fill it there will still be a discernable line in the finish on the back? :help:

whoa that sucks

is it just the pic or is there another line coming out of the control cavity?

Optical delusion, body join on that side does not show anything.

Ouch!!

I think that will show if you fill it with the paste filler.  This may be one for the Warmoth staff to answer.  The materials that you used did not make that glue joint open like that.

I sure wouldn't think so; now it's gets REALLY weird. Just brought it back inside to hang for night, it's been 12 hours since I took the last picture, and the crack appears to have closed back up mostly. Can still see line, but it's not separated enough to see bare wood. WTF? Now I'm REALLY fudging baffled? :icon_scratch: :icon_scratch: :icon_scratch:

Could be the woods ambient temperature changing from inside to outside is causing the pieces to move around  :dontknow:

I was thinking the same!  :icon_scratch:

Not really any change in temperature to speak of here this week, in mid seventies inside and when I take it out, only in eighties for highs; been doing this routine in summer for every build I've done previously, sometimes with wider temp differentials.

Filler's finally getting somewhat dry; rubbed back some more of the excess black with burlap. This is a little different than I thought it would come out, but digging it. Starting to look like all chrome hardware and a birdeye neck with jet black ebony fretboard will be called for....

I dream of highs in the 80's, it's 11:30 PM here and it's still in the 90's outside. Only thing that stay 80 is the humidity.

Jack, when you spray your clear do you hang the guitar the same way?

I was not wanting to drill holes in the neck pocket, how do you do it.

What did Warmoth tell you about the crack? If it was mine, I'd want to glue it and clamp it before I did any more....

Hmmmmmmm, then just how do plan on attaching the neck? :icon_scratch:

I think it's looking fantastic, Jack, but I would be very concerned about that crack.  I wouldn't want to finish it and have it separate again later.

If it were mine I'd be talking to Warmoth about returning it for a replacement.  It would not be a happy day to get it all together and have the separation issue return...
