Swamp Ash JBass Blue Dye Project

Jack,

Jack,
What you been growing out on that beautiful farm? I got to tell you a true story.  Several years’ back I had these really questionable guys coming into the paint store I was managing and buying MEK 15 or 20 gallons at I time.  Being clueless I asked what they were using all the stuff for and they told me, “ Dry Cleaning”.  I bought it, I didn’t know any better until about 6 months later our company started having to report large sales of MEK because it was being used to cook meth.  By that time my boys had stopped showing up and my MEK sales went into the toilet.

Paint thinner will work fine.  I like using the Benzene because it is hotter and it makes the stuff flash of faster.

Alfang thank you for the complement.  I enjoy sharing what I know on the board here and get a kick out of all of you and your senses of humor so I’ll just keep putting up stuff as I go.

Toluene (methyl benzene) is one methyl group away from benzene.  Not sure how restricted sales of it are now, but it should be rather similar.  Xylenes (dimethyl benzene) are two methyl groups away...  There is a trend here somewhere.

UPDATE: Finally got the Jasco situation straightened out with Dunn-Edwards and should receive the filler any day. The body arrived today, and while the grain looks even better in person, for some reason somebody at Warmoth inexplicably decided to drill another control in it and make it V-V-T-T. I did not order this, had originally ordered a JBass neck pickup route as the body was erroneously listed in the eStore, but the MM pickup route is in the "sweet spot" and wouldn't take a neck pickup route. The email confirmation showed the ordered Jbass pickup route but NOT the change to control hole routing:

Products
------------------------------------------------------
B884 x 1 Hollow JBass® Replacement Body B884 = $199.00
- Bridge Drilled For Gotoh 201
- Neck Pickup Rout JBass® (Neck Size, 3 5/8)
------------------------------------------------------

I was going to put a Rio Grande MM4 pickup in here and wire it in passive mode with a volume for each coil and a master tone, but guess I'll have to switch plans and use a pickup with a pre-amp to use the extra control hole; would have ordered a battery box routed had I wanted to do that...

Weird...
I've been thinking for a while: looks like the "busy" time of them are complicating their work, isn't the first case to pop-up here with problems in the last months...  :-\
Time to increase the guys on production line, to me  :dontknow:

Wow Jack, that is just awful.  The only solution I can see is you are going to have to build another one.  Wait, that is not awful, that's...

The guys at the Woodcraft store claimed they had some of the 2-step wood bleach still in stock, but were wrong; just painted body with a 1-step Liberon Wood Bleacher, will have to wait till it dries back out to see how that worked and post pic...

Was going to dye the body this a.m., wound up having to go back to Tonar's original thread. The dye concentrate is NOT soluable in paint thinner; have to run out and get lacquer thinner....

Well it's all done through the dying process, will shoot a washcoat after a while when it finished drying. Wound up doing it a little darker, than I'd imagined, but when you've applying this stuff you have to be quick, and I liked the way it was looking and went that way.

Tonar - Apparently the Universal Dye Concentrate can NOT be cleaned back off with lacquer thinner or any other solvent in the house. Any idea of how long my fingers will be the same color as the bass?

Getting nice! In the end are you going to make it look more shinny or going to let it in that pale color? really like it as it is...

It will take a few days to ware off.  I use the thin hospital gloves when I’m using any stains.

The color is great and will look amazing once you get the black filler and the gloss on it.

I wouldn't use any kind of thinner or solvent to clean those off the fingers... if they dye were bad for you the thinner will only make your skin absorb it more, and the thinner isn't good for you already. You can wash with soap and water but it will stay for a few days. You could use an abrasive soap like Lava or something to get it off quicker.

Got the Jasco filler, added black dye and applied, used lacquer thinner to thin first fill without any apparent ill effect. Lookin' good so far, now I have to wait a week for this to shrink in... May take it to nudie bar and bake in tanning bed to speed up. How does that work on oil filler, Tonar? Works for water based OK....

So, are you still going to do the burst?  Look's great by the way, it really dosent need it...

No burst; maybe on another one in the future. Haven't worked with the products I'm using on this project before and they kind of took me in a little different direction during the process. Real pleased with how it's turning out.

Original plan was a blonde neck, either figured maple or canary and chrome hardware, but I'm not sure now. May wind up with a birdseye or flame neck with jet black ebony board and black hardware. Won't be able to make up my mind until the body's all done.
