Hey guys! How are you all???

I'm going to make a surgery on my shoulder this friday... I got "S.L.A.P. lesion", I don't know much about what is it, but it's kinda like the biceps have made a cut in the ligament of the shoulder... It'll need to be nailed to the bone again...
Since Doc 'N Rock is back he can help explaning what this sh!t is :laughing7:
But it's something like this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SLAP_tear

All doctors are saying it's a simple surgery and I'll be back 100%, so I'm trying not to worry much...
This is a old lesion, first pain came in June... Went in 2 doctors that help NOTHING and them went in a super-specialist, paid big money and have the problem discovered... I'm not sure if I'll play Rugby again, if I do, I'll change the position that I play to one that make less effort on the shoulder...
That's it, thought that somebody perhaps would like to know...
Perhaps I'll be a little away from a while, but nothing serious going on...

Cheers

Nando,

Good luck with that. I'm sure it will be a success and all will be well. I'm sure your shoulder hurts pretty good now. Soon that will be gone and you will be rockin' again!

Just be sure before you go under to make sure the doctor knows your not there for a sex change. :laughing3:

Good Luck, Be Well!

I dont want to sound too negative - BE CAREFUL after the surgery

I know a guy, Ralph, works for a sister company to the one I work for.  He's been in surgery three times in three years, because he begins to do too much, too soon.  He undoes and makes it even worse.  There is a point... at which no further treatment can help him, and he's very close to that.  He said to a mutual friend - he had one chance of getting it fixed so it would be normal - and he blew it.  As it is, he's going to be lucky to have 50 percent use and strength from his shoulder.

LET IT HEAL as it should, please?

Thanks guys!
I'm trying to focus on be really cool with my shoulder for the 6 months after surgery...
I'll only come back to play Rugby if, talking with my coach and friends that play for long time, I understand that loosing weight and trainning harder I can go really high on the sport, like national team and so (very few players in Brazil, so not something from outer world, like soccer)... If I'm just one more guy playing (most probably) I'll come back on guitars and drawing - will try be a tattoo artist someday :)

Well, this Thread answers the PM I sent to your Facebook account. :icon_thumright:

Hope all goes well for the surgery.

I have an old school buddy who had to have shoulder surgery to save his career as a dentist. He found that on difficult extractions & with the wrong angle to work on the affected tooth, he'd pop his shoulder! (Not good for business if you have a nervous patient and then right in the middle of the procedure, your shoulder goes 'pop')

He had to travel to another State in Australia to see the best surgeon for that job, and from what I have heard since, he took 6 months away from doing anything strenous on his shoulder & all eventually healed well after some physio. He did say that it affected his violin playing though, as he could only play a violin for short periods before the shoulder started aching badly. Dunno how he went with all that in the long term, I haven't seen him for like 10 years now, but he's still a dentist so I guess it ended up OK.

The football news stories throughout the world are full of stories of players coming back too early and re-injuring themselves. As you are not a paid professional footballer, I'd strongly recommend you take a lot of care with that shoulder and do a lot of physio and recovery & rehabilitation work. When the time is right to return to playing, you might want to also see if you can find someone who knows how to strap the shoulder properly for a game, so that you can get some extra support for it.

All the best and we hope to hear from you soon.

Ask for a play-by-play on what they'll be doing and the cuts they'll be making.

Make sure you've got a doctor that knows his circular incisions from his circumcisions.

I'll also emphasize the importance of doing ALL the recovery/physiotherapy work. It makes all the difference, so be sure to do it.

Best wishes for a quick surgery and speedy recovery!!!

We'll be thinking about you and look forward to your return.  I'm hoping it is not the arm which makes the pleasure that you won't be able to use for six months.  Best wishes.

Just so you know, if you wake up and the guy in the next bed over is a skinny looking green guy with hair and wrinkles, he's you're small intestine, and something has not quite gone right.

You'll be great and playing guitar again soon depending on which shoulder is affected. If your a righty and it's your right shoulder, you'll be able to pick just not strum too hard for about a month. SLAP is an acronym standing for: Superior Labrum Anterior to Posterior. The labrum is the cartilage outlining the inside of the shoulder. Anterior is front and posterior is back and superior is top - so it is a tear of the top cartilage from the front to the back exactly where the biceps tendon begins in the shoulder.
I wrote a chapter in a book on MRI about the subject and am happy to answer any questions. Nowadays it is a very fast arthroscopy procedure when done by someone with experience.

This is coolest forum I know about. Muito Obrigado and good luck No Nonsense.

Physical therapy sucks, but do it.  Keep stretching those stupid rubber bands.  Like CB says, you really only have one chance to let it heal RIGHT!

Nonsense, buddy, in all seriousness:  Mark your good shoulder with a sharpie.  Write on it: Not this one!! Or somthing like that.

I had a buddy once that had knee surgery and he marked his good knee so the doctor knew which one to operate on.  I don't know if he heard some sort of urban legend or something that spooked him, but I totally saw his point.  Imagine waking up to find out they did the wrong shoulder by mistake!!!

I didn't mean to scare you or anything.  Just making sure your funny bone isn't broke!!!

Actually bro I hope you have a speedy recovery and remember to hit on all the hot nurses, you never know :icon_thumright:

I've read about people having the wrong limb amputated, actually.

Dude........ I mean think about that!!!  You go into surgery knowing they are gonna chop off whatever it is that they are gonna chop off, which must be pretty heavy to deal with in it's own sense.  Then you wake up and, well you still have your f*cked up limb and no good limb, cause they cut it off!!!

Wow I would want to cut the doctor's balls off.........

Thank you all for the kind words! :D

I'm trying not to think a lot about it... but lets see... The doctor who will make the surgery is very good, on one of the best hospital to sport here in Brazil, think it'll be alright!

Hey PT, the MRI says that I've a cut "from 9 to 2 hours" on the labrum... Ain't understand a lot, but doesn't sound much good :laughing7: Makes me think half of the thing is cutted :sad1:

If you are going to have an operation on a limb, get a sharpie and write "THIS ONE" on it and "WRONG ARM" on the other.  No joke.

Hey guys! Thank you all for the support! I've been a little stressed and it was very appreciated!

But, there was a problem with the papers from the health care plan (no idea how you call it) and it'll be post-pone a little... Tomorrow I'll know when it will happen!
Thank you all :D
