Do you have to use steel strings with steel frets, and nickel strings with nickel frets? Can you mix them, steel with nickel? :icon_scratch:

And you can never use nickel plated steel strings anywhere!  :evil4:

BTW - nickel strings on my stainless fret tele sound just fine to me.

That's just a myth.  Use what works for you.  Imagine how bad nylon string players would have it.  :laughing7:

Where on earth were you getting such a notion that you have to use certain frets with certain strings!?!? ??? :icon_scratch: ??? :icon_scratch:

Did you think the guitar would burst into pieces if steel touched nickel?

Do you mean how they wear and tear on the frets? Nickel frets just .. crumble ..

Ah.
You mean how stainless strings would wear out nickel frets faster than nickel strings, and stainless frets would wear out nickel strings faster than stainless strings?

There is no rule, you can play whatever you want to play.
I'm going to have to take the same stance on the matter as aggressive roundwounds on a soft fingerboard...

Play what you want to play to get the tone you want.
If you need to play strings that wear out your frets faster or frets that wear out your strings faster, that's just what it takes to get your tone and playability from the instrument.
The instrument is merely a tool in which to express yourself with. It's much better to be happy with it and deal with the maintenance every-so-often than to accept a compromise in tone/playability so that the instrument can last forever.

Cut two strings off and put some flatwounds on there, and never change your strings again.

it doesn't matter which two strings

or you can cut one string twice, and replace it with two strings

Not sure about the second part. The general goal of cutting two strings is to end up with four, not seven. I love when flats get old on basses.

I've used the all nickel strings a couple of times, they have a nice mellower tone. I might try them again next time I hit up juststrings.com

Yes. I moved from stainless to nickel strings on my J bass and it took a lot of the edge off.

Nickel strings with Alnico pickup only and steel strings with steel poled pickups only ?  :laughing7:

AFAIK, all plain G, B and E strings are the same - nickel plated steel, no matter who's strings, and type you get.  AFAIK, only the wound strings differ.  Those being the core shape, the core material (the exact alloy), the winding alloy - nickel plated steel, nickel, stainless steel, bronze, etc, and the winding shape - being round, tape, flattened, or trapezoid (to lay square when wound).

Yep like some have been saying, "pure nickle wrap" strings have a mellower tone and are perfect for a harsh-toned rig.

Doing old-school rock? pure nickle wrap strings.

Too much thin pingy treble? pure nickle wrap strings.

Standard Strat config?  pure nickle wrap strings.

etc...

If you want to do metal (hair, death, etc), stick with "nickel plated steel"  - bright as hell but has its niche.

There definitely *is* a difference.

I use all stell 11's - i used to play regular D'addarios, nickel wound I guess, but they made my fingers itch and I don't want to explore the wonderful world of metal allergy :P
