Stratocaster Front or Rear Rout?

I'm thinking about making a custom strat. I'm not sure if I wanna go rear rout or go traditional front rout.
Do you lose anything if you go rear rout?

Also if you have any pictures of a rear rout and what it looks like inside, would be appreciated.

Thanks

It's personal preference. Some like pickguards, some don't.

If you want a nice laminate top, don't hide all the wood.

Rear routed cavities are more generous, but I don't mind a pickguard, even on highly figured tops. Not saying I would chose to cover it up, but I wouldn't turn down a showcase body I liked simply because it was top routed.

Besides, the pickguard can be an interesting feature itself.

Welcome!

The only down side to rear route is you have to be a bit more careful if you're drilling your own holes for pots or mini switches.  Not that it's a big deal, but you need to be a little more careful.

You also have to make 100% sure what PU routes you want - with a top route you can get a universal (swimming pool) PU route and just get a new pickguard if you change your mind down the line and want an HB instead of an SC in some position (or vise versa).

OTOH, if you want to play with different wiring options, it's much easier with a rear route. You can just temporarily jumper up different options to find out which ones are completely useless to you.

But really it's mostly a cosmetic difference, so you just choose whatever look you like best.

If it has a pickguard I usually get it as HSH rather than the Olympic Swimming Pool rout.
Still have plenty of options that way.

I've shaped the pickguard to reveil more of the Flame / Quilt.

Gee all my (Strats) without pickguards still looks & plays like a Strat to me.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it isn't a strat, but if I were planning a rear route, I'd consider a soloist instead.

(But I really really wanted chambered on my current project.)

I agree. A Soloist or a VIP. But, they both can be dramatically more expensive than a Strat body, so there's that to consider.
