Hi all,
I'm currently building a custom strat with following specs.
Body: Strat (mahogany) (hard tail)
Neck: LP neck (padouk) w/ tusq xl
PU: vintage vibe sp90(singlecoil sized P90) x 3
Tuner: gotoh sgzl510 locking tuners with h.a.p.m
Bridge: Glendale tele bridge and plate for strat hard tail
Ferrule: Glendale 3 brass 3 aluminum
Anodized pickguard
Control: 1 x vol(250k), 1 x tone(500k /w treble bleed), 1 x 3 notch rotary switch for s-1 switch like mod + 2 additional pickup combination. 1 x 5 way super switch.
Bumble bee capacitor, NOS cloth cable from vintage strat.

Now the guitar with mr.ulbrick, an Australian amp manufacturer whose amp has been used by big names like Eric Johnson, robben ford, Bryan may, and etc. He will do all the set-up and wirings for me.

Now the question is what kind of sound will come out of this guitar?
Can you please tell me how the sound will be from the spec?
Some of my mates said it would be like SG with P90.
Has anyone tried this configuration before?
Just give me your opinion regarding this new axe !!!

1st post &  :icon_scratch: some very hard Q's to answer … Welcome !!
(probably why not to many replies)

Sounds like a mixed xmas hamper to me  :icon_jokercolor:  with LP / Tele / Strat bits.
BUT ... that doesn't mean it's not going to work !!
Not sure if anyone has similar spec's.

Anyway the sound is coming 99% from your pickups, so I suggest looking at there web site for audio clips.
That should give you some indication to what it will sound like.

The sound that comes out of your guitar should be Electric  :icon_biggrin:

It might be more to the point, that you end up telling us what it sounds like, when it's completed.
We're all ears ....
Don't forget some pic's & sound clips :icon_thumright:

I don't know about the specific parts on your build, but I would say pickups are only about 75% ish of the sound.  I had two identical guitars that I wired up exactly the same with the exact same pickups.  One was maple with a maple and walnut neck.  The other was Padouk and rosewood with a padouk and rosewood neck.  They sounded quite a bit different.  The maple guitar was a lot brighter sounding and the padouk and rosewood guitar was much warmer.

Now the question is what kind of sound will come out of this guitar?

LP headstock w/strat body? why the bumblebee caps when you could use seventeen cent caps? NOS cloth wire really?

I predict it will sound strikingly similar to every other guitar that YOU have played. Unless you get someone else to play it that is.

As mentioned it will sound like a strat with p-90's. As for the visual, I say "abomination".  :laughing7: I would ditch the lp pedhead, and go with the warmth shape, but that's just me

I don't know If I'd go so far as to call it an "abomination", but it'll certainly be a mutt.

It's worth considering that you never see those combinations/choices in real life. It's not like any of those options aren't available to everyone. If they made any sense at all, somebody would have been down that road already by this point.

But, who knows? Maybe he's onto something. Maybe he's given this a great deal of thought and done a massive amount of research in order to come to the conclusions he has. Perhaps none of us knows better. After all, it's all a grand experiment, really. We should all start putting balsa necks on aluminum bodies with triple coil pickups, right?

Naaah!!

I did use the term in jest. Just reminds me of the movie Underworld, where the Vampires and Werewolfs are forbidden from cross breeding, out of fear of the hybrid race that might be created.  :laughing7:

Whatever gets built, it will be interesting.

I'm going to push back with my standard questions here.

You've listed a lot of build details, (not a bad thing) but nothing about your specific sonic goals.  If your primary concern is something that looks different, you've succeeded.  You want to build a guitar.  How do you want it to sound?  Respectfully, if you don't have an end goal there, it will be exceptionally difficult to know if you've met your goal.

Is that something you want to play for the next several years?

:sad1: I kind of like it...

Just remember, the LP neck won't change the tone any more than a padouk strat neck would. The headstock shape won't make a difference, but the scale length (25.5" vs 24.75") and woods used WILL. So if you're doing the LP headstock for looks then thats one thing, but it won't give you any more of an LP sound than any other padouk neck.

Hi everyone, thanks for your opinions!! I'm really happy to see a lot of posts regarding my project!

As Wyliee mentioned my tonal goal in this project, I thought about how I started the project.

I initially wanted some warm sounding guitar,  that was it.

First, I found a hardtail strat mahogany body sold on Ebay this May, and it was cheap ($100AUD), so I grabbed it.

I didn't mean to start immediately, but my wife told me to finish it off, so I started searching for the neck.

As many of you said I didn't plan to put LP neck because I thought it would look ridiculous.

Then I found a guy who actually did make Strat body with LP neck, and it didn't look that bad at all!

And also the sound was nice too.

http://acapella.harmony-central.com/showthread.php?2361688-NGD-Strat-with-Les-Paul-neck-!-!

So I decided to go with the LP neck, thought that would make the sound to be fatter and warmer.

Once I chose the LP neck, I started thinking of creating something different from other guitars,

therefore, I went on to look for tele bridge because I quite like how it feels when I play it and found glendale parts which have been widely used by many of the big names (Billy Gibbons, etc). And thank God, they had a tele bridge plate for hardtail strat.

The last thing I had to do was the electronic part. I had checked some youtube videos and thought I should go with P90, but my body doesn't have a proper routing, then my wife found a website for Vintage Vibe(http://vintagevibeguitars.com/windows/sc_90Win.html), who is the only manufacturer of the singlecoil sized p90 pickups, and the Pup sounds great when I listened to their audio file.

The wiring part has been decided after consulting a guy from singlecoil.com, he gave me advice on the Pot values and capacitors to use.

After all said and done, I guess I wanted to create something different, and not after any particular sound except for the warm sounding.

Now I'm waiting for the Mr.Ulbrick to call me back...

Hopefully it will get done over this weekend!

I will upload some audio files and pics of the guitar when it's home!!

Cheers,
