started the finish on my jazzcaster. Gorilla vanilla/wimbledon white

I took a couple mock up shots of my jazzcaster. I painted it with Duplicolor color match in Wimbledon white. I was going for the gorilla vanilla look. I also started laying down the clear coats today on the jazzcaster.  i went with minwax lacquer in semi gloss. I wanted an almost matte feel. Im going to maybe use one and half cans to two cans. I went semi gloss cause i wanted it to wear quickly. so far so good with the exception of a small freakin hair getting into the finish. its so small it actually looks like an eyelash. I plan to take some 1000 wet/dry paper and attempt to get it out. I tried to pick up just one corner or the other to remove it but its buried. I cant decide upon a maple or a rosewood neck tho.

Not to sound too much like a shithead as I'm just curious, but why would you want a finish that would "wear quickly"? Are you trying to prove you can't do a good finish, or that you want to pretend you work at playing the instrument more than you actually do, or that you have some kind of weird urge to refinish it often?

I've never understood the deliberately wrecked finish. It's nothing less than a lie and not only does everyone know it, it's obvious from a million miles away. Personally, I'm embarrassed about every scratch in my instruments. Says I don't care or take care of them. In my mind, it ranks right up there with "I don't brush my teeth or wipe my ass".

I've just never understood why anyone would want a guitar that looked like it had been owned by an irresponsible icehole. But, that's just me. I want my instruments to look like they've been taken care of and treated they way you'd treat anything that meant something to you.

If you hate the thing so much that you'd let or force it come to harm, at least let somebody else enjoy the thing while you buy/build something you can get next to.

Originally I think you were going with an orange, but I do like this colour more.  Maple or rosewood would work as a fretboard, but did you mean a neck made entirely of rosewood ? That would look great.

I was meaning fret board woods however an all rosewood neck would look great. As to why I wanted a matte finish, I like the worn look. I have a few guitars that I baby and I wanted one that showed some personality. It may not be for everyone and that's cool too. Simply because you don't understand it doesn't mean the free world has to go with what you believe to be true. However, thanks for the post anyways .

While I'm not a fan of relic finishes, worn I can get on board with. I've always said that the absolute best "relic" is a guitar that has been finished thin and has naturally worn.

But, the appeal to wear has never been understood by many guitarists. My father used to make fun of me for playing a '46 J-45 over this $200 takamine we had lying around. I thought he was crazy, he thought I was. Still does. Different strokes definitely apply here.

Exactly. This is not a relic. It's simply going to be a bit more glossy in the places my arm lays or where my hand sits.

Been asking the same question ever since purposefully wrecked guitars somehow became acceptable and even desirable and have never gotten an answer that tracked. At least, not from the perpetrators. In my experience, most people do their best to take care of their instruments.They're delicate and expensive. When they start showing wear, they get them re-fretted or refinished or both. It's generally only the very poor or very careless who do not. I can't imagine why anyone would want to be thought of as poor or careless, regardless of reality, so wtf?

I like relic'ed guitars because they repel bears and cure cancer.

Personally, I think Jazzcasters are ugly, but I'm guessing the original poster doesn't give a wet slap how I feel about his choices.

Oh, make no mistake. My intentions are good, but I've never expected to hear an answer that tracks. Nobody will ever admit to that embarrassing reality. I just like asking the question to see what kind of bullshit answer I get. Someday, somebody will get honest, but I'm not going to hold my breath while I wait for that.

As for jazzcasters, I've learned to hold my tongue on many designs since I learned to love the Telecaster.

No she doesn't care what ones opinion is on if you like a jazzcaster or relic or none relic. Lol. She likes what she likes as does everyone else. I have guitars I am psycho about. This is meant to reflect my interactions with the guitar. To give  it some personality . Think that's a bs answer ? Oh well.

On the worn or relic thing. I think it's each to his or her own take on it.

Interestingly I have an 80s Hamer that I have had since new, it was a pearlescent white, but has worn through many years of playing, moving, gigs etc. I recently a few months back had SS frets put on it and a Plek job. It's brought it back to life but the finish is really worn and I can't make my mind up quite on getting around to a refinish. Even so the first ding in it was done by someone else and that one stands out to me more than the natural wear. 

Perhaps I want to keep it as near to its origin as possible as the guitar has been around with me for a while. But I would not buy a guitar relic new like this, possibly a slight worn look can look ok. To refinish or not that is the question.
