staining problems

hey guys

I found out recently on a test piece of mahogany that stain will not take over a coat of grain filler....so I sanded back my body for about the 8th time (no exaduation) . I then stained the body with Minwax red mahogany stain....there are spots on the front and back of the body where I must not have gotten all the grain filler off because the stain did not take to the wood and stayed wet on the surface.

Should I sand back the entire surface (front and back) or can I just spot sand and re-stain?

thanks
Brian

It will in the long run probably be easier to resand the entire body down, as if you spot sand/stain you could run into issues leveling your gloss top coats.

I’m with Jack.
1. Sand it all the way back.  Wet it with Benzene so you can see spots that have not opened up.  It should look uniform wet!
2. Stain it again.
3. Put a wash coat of sealer on it.
4. Fill it with dark mahogany filler.
5. Start finishing it with clear.

It will look great!!
