I have ordered Brazilian Rosewood boards from Warmoth and paid the up charge to have them select very dark wood.  High grade Brazilian is very dark.  I got one that almost looked like Ebony and the other a very dark chocolate brown.  I feel very lucky that we can still get Brazilian Rosewood from Warmoth.

I change my mind! Nobody order Brazilian Rosewood boards they are not very good.
I'm calling right now to order one.... :toothy10:

Damn, they're closed....

That's pretty much on my list. A dark brownish ebony, or dark BW are my default options. Though if I see a nice one of something else in stock I might do some research. That one really dark ziricote board they have is pretty nice and I'm checking that one out at the moment. And I have guitars with ebony, maple, indian and and brazilian rosewood in the house already, so that might be worth a roll of the dice to try out on this. You know, before I start burning cigarettes into it and all.

The one dark brazilian currently listed is not really all that dark looking, at least in the photo.

macassar ebony! sounds perfect i think. feel of ebony, but cool figuring and rosewood-ish look for the relic project. just a thought.

I dunno, I guess that's pretty close? Hard to tell before the green goes on.

Maybe some other posters can weigh in here - does the black burst need to be wider to match or no? My sense is it might need a little wider

This one is closer to Stevie's, the other is too orange...

Now it just needs a beating.... :headbang:

I think for sure there's too much yellow up on that horn, I guess in between the two srv photos is about what I'm shooting for.

This is where it is at right now. I fattened up the black,  shot the green and it has a couple of wash coats of clear to get it all to melt together.

This shot gives a good idea of the width of the burst. Notice its width in relationship to where the jack cup will sit.

Killer job, Tonar. Looks great, Jay. That's gonna be one sweet guitar. Looks like it could use a tiny bit more green to me if it's not too late to add any more.  :dontknow: I can't wait to see the finished guitar.  :toothy10:

I've never seen people question a Tonarburst before. Even when his work-in-progress pics make me go  :icon_scratch:, the outcome every single time is  :sign13:, I love it!

I sent a note to Tonar for another pass of green.

And it's not so much questioning his work as I'm pretty familiar with it at this point (there's even a guitar he did for me that you guys haven't seen yet). He tends to relate things like burst size to 50's strats and whatnot, whereas I'm just trying to figure out how reptilian I can get it looking without completely losing the classic strat look.

Tell you what though, it's going to be hard as hell to start trashing the thing when it comes time

That is way too nice, I wouldn't be doing a relic job on that guitar, its nitro, just everyday handling will relic it up on its own, having said that I cant wait to see what you do with it, I love when people take a chance and put those extra personal touches on, wether it be special hardware or sanding and aging parts, its a blast. Cool guitar. :o
