Well, here's the plan:

JMH.jpg

Tonar will once again be doing the finish (this will be the 3rd body & 5th neck I've done with him). Unsure whether it will be him or I doing the relic side of it, but more likely than not it will be me. Alder body, and I plan to use a maple-rosewood neck he's done for me already.

A few possible changes from what you see in the photo: chrome hardware instead of gold, a one-volume one-tone config (spaced somewhat like an Ibanez; normally the volume knob gets in my way), and I probably won't reverse the bridge. I might upside-down the "custom" sticker just because I can. Obviously not aiming for a perfect SRV replica, just a sort-of nod to him while doing my own thing.

Updated 8/5: Tonar stripped/refinished and it's expected to be done in a couple of weeks. I have the neck for it done, here it is after the first shot or two of clear. Rethinking the relic part at the moment

For those wanting to see something sooner:

I have a Warmoth-finished LP baritone that will be done shortly (the neck will arrive neck week), and also a new Warmoth Tele Custom (natural/nitro with maple/Brazilian rosewood). Still short a few parts for each, will get some photos soon.

Tonar and I agreed on this fine 2-pc body here, so just snatched it. 3 lbs, 11 oz. Warmoth, ship that ****.

Seems like an excellent candidate. Alder? Going to get some black and brown dye for the exposed parts?

Crazy stuff.. i like sunburst, and not a big fan of dragonburst... but the mockup is just too awesome

Funny you should say that. I'm not a fan of relicing or sunbursts, generally speaking, but for some reason this kind of sit well with me when I dreamed it up.

I don't get it, to me that mockup looks, ah, nevermind, but I'm sure if you dream it up and Tonar does the work it'll be awesome anyhow. Good luck!  :icon_thumright:

Sweet, Stevie is deffinately one of my all time favorite guitarists. But on his necks he liked pau ferro over rosewood... :dontknow:

Actually his signature model was originally spec'd to have a brazilian rosewood board. Originally they were to be a limited run, but following stevies death jimmie vaughan requested that the guitar be made widely available/affordable, thus the cheaper pau ferro.

That little PF detail always puzzled me.  It was on the SRV sig model, but I wasn't aware of Strats ever having a fretboard of anything other than Maple or Rosewood.  The cheapest SRV sig model I ever saw was around $1,600.  I don't see how a PF fretboard kept it affordable.

I wasn't reffering to the Fender production guitars. I was talking about his original number #1, according to his guitar tech at the time, Stevie had him replace the original rosewood fb with a pau ferro fb.

Well his intentions were to play the signature model as number 1 was getting worn out and he was on his way to retiring it. Interesting though. Where did you read about the neck with the pau ferro?

I read it in a book about Stevie that belonged to a friend of mine. there is some interviews with Rene Martinez, who was Stevie's guitar tech...

There's very little chance I'm going with Pao Ferro for the fretboard wood. I'm considering a brownish-colored ebony fretboard for it lately, I have one strat with an ebony fretboard I really like playing on a lot (it's a Mighty Mite and strangely it's the best playing neck I have on any guitar). It's just pure black and I don't think that would match too well here though.

Going to have a lot of fun with this one either way.

I have ordered Brazilian Rosewood boards from Warmoth and paid the up charge to have them select very dark wood.  High grade Brazilian is very dark.  I got one that almost looked like Ebony and the other a very dark chocolate brown.  I feel very lucky that we can still get Brazilian Rosewood from Warmoth.

I change my mind! Nobody order Brazilian Rosewood boards they are not very good.
