Sperzel Locking Tuners WTH??!

I have 3 guitars with Sperzel locking tuners, one of which are the "EZ-Mount" style. I decided I'd like to buy a set in black for another one of my guitars, and......no one has them! What's up with that??!

Hmmm. that's usually a bad sign that they're not being made anymore. or that the distributer has dropped them.

I may go with Hipshot.

I've also had good luck with hipshot over several sets.

I think they're basically made to order direct nowadays. You have to email or call to get a quote. Or try TK Instruments. He might have some stock. I used to get sets from him. It was years ago though, so I don't know if he still does that.

I just ordered the Hipshot. They are going on an old Ibanez neck with reverse headstock.
It's a tilt-back, so non-staggared posts.

Sperzel has been struggling ever since Bob died. Last time I spoke with him (more than 20 years ago!) he told me he was working on something "that would turn the guitar world on its ear". He succumbed to some serious health issues shortly after that, RIP

Are Sperzel still using the 12:1 ratio? That was my biggest issue with them.

I love the Hipshots. I have them on the Ibanez in my Avatar. I don’t use a locking nut on that guitar and it stays in tune with all the crazy Vai-like yanks & such.

I've always used the Gotoh mag locks, but tried the Hipshot open gear grip-locks on the Meadowhawk and really like them.

Open gear locking Hipshots are often my call. Just put them on a MIM Strat a couple weeks ago.

100% Hipshot on all my custom guitars ( Except the Z-bass which came precut for Gotoh )

i filled out an order form with those guys a while back never heard form them so I ordered a different brand. Then out of the blue about a month later they emailed me with a price asking for credit card info. I would have loved to use them but too late.

My two cents is that the only trouble I have experienced with locking tuners has been with two sets of Sperzels. Small sampling, but I no longer trust them.
