I haven't been around here much - or playing my electrics at all - in the past few months. Been moving around a lot, staying in places without internet or electricity, working on non-guitar stuff (like singing! whoa). But, I have been slowly bringing together all the parts for this tele Tonar has been finishing for me. And even though you all know this without my saying so, Tonar's work is incredible.

I'm absurdly excited about this guitar. I really think this'll be my best build so far. The going's been slow, nothing is assembled yet, and I still need to send the neck off for finishing. But here's essentially what she'll look like.

Excuse my lousy camera. I'll give a rundown of all the specs when I'm finally finished, but who cares about the details? Ultimately I went with Lollar's firebird and Special T pickups. They should balance nicely, and I can't wait to hear 'em. This baby's gonna burn.

Tortoiseshell.   :icon_thumright:

No way man, I can see what you're going for, but I want to keep this simple, understated. Not sure why, but I'm really sold on the black guard  :icon_biggrin:

That is gorgeous.  Pure Classcaster.  I've never seen/thought of Sonic Blue/blackguard before they seem made for each other on that Tele.  Great idea with the mini-hum neck p'up as well.

Looking great, man! +1 to blackguard, and I thought firebird pups were really hot.

Compared to mini-buckers, firebird pickups are lower output and brighter -- exactly the kind of pickup that belongs in a tele, if you ask me.

EDIT: Here's what lollar says about the firebird pickup: "a sound that resembles a fat single-coil more than a full-size humbucker. This is an overall brighter pickup (compared to the Mini) with a bass response that stays tight and defined longer than a Mini. Less snarl than a Mini with more spank."

If not tortoise shell (hot imo), it needs to be single ply white or white/black/white.

Let me see if I can dig up a pic of my sonic blue Tele.

edit:  Here it is with w/b/w, and yes, that's a Warmoth finished body:

Looks good! I like the blackguard on it a lot.  :icon_thumright:

Are you sure you don't want a matching headstock?

Firebird pickups sound so good!

Great video! They sure do sound good. And sadly Greg, I am not a "matching headstock" kind of guy  :laughing7:

Actually I kind of like the black guard. I mean do we really need another sonic blue fender with tortoise shell, really? It looks pretty good as is here

I'm a tortoise shell fan, but the black looks perfect on that guitar. Don't change a thing! I love the Tele bridge/mini humbucker neck combo in my Tele - they balance well and the middle position sounds great. I ended up wiring mine the tone knob to the bridge pickup on mine to get a brighter sound when the neck pickup is selected on its own.

I may as well pile on - I prefer the black guard over the tortoise as well.
