What kind of cloth should I use to apply the stain? The directions just say a "lint-free" cloth, but I figured you amazing people would be a little more specific and have some ideas or tips.

You definitely want something old. Or if you literally have nothing you're willing to use - make sure it's lint free.  I once used an old beat up ink stained t-shirt for a finish. I didn't remember the shirt, it was so old. Turns out it was one of my wife's late step dad's shirts. I was in hot water for weeks.
