Gibbons' rack stuff (Gibbons' rack stuff?) is just as elusive.  Even when looking at it, many speculate that's not even what's really in it.  Others say his Crate gear on stage is just for looks and a stage monitor at best; his live sound is either done via direct in or a 112 iso cab.

Billy is as notorious as Edward when it comes to revealing/hiding the true source of his tone... chances are
that little Fender Tweed box on the left is the source, uses only one of those chrome stompboxes (rest are spares)
and the rest (rack stuff) is to corn-fuse everyone.

wow - people actually used those Dumble amps?

Why not? They're only about $40,000.

Larry Carlton plays one.

The thing with Dumble amps - Alex wasn't stupid... he had a good sounding amp (but not $40000-sounding)
and he just played the market to make it seem like his was super-exclusive.  Hence playing on
people's typical penchant for associating more value to something that's more expensive and of
course not readily available.

What I heard was you'd give Alex the money upfront and he'd take a year to build it.  And he didn't
make a ton of them, either.

Because of all this, that is why Dumbles are in the $40-50K range nowadays.

Apparently he'd go through vacuum tubes faster than a Suburban goes through gas

Check out how they mic'd for both cabs the same way - SM57s on grilles, unknown mic a slight
distance away and pointing down at angle (prolly to pick up what one's ears would hear if they
were standing by the front of the amp listening/playing).

It looks like ol' Keef just keeps buying more stuff and adding it on, trying to figure out why he can't ever sound as good as he did on "Exiles on Main Street." It might be just a little expensive to transport the basement of a French chateau around, loaded with an old Fender Twin.... I wonder if he even remembers what's in his rack, or why he bought it? If I had his millions I'd be just as goofy I'm sure. I read somewhere that if a songwriter placed just ONE song on the "Classic Rock" list that gets played on radio stations all across America year after year, it was worth $70,000 to $90,000 a year. The Stones have like, ten? Plus tours, plus commercial endorsements, plus playing private parties for $1,000,000 a pop... what a burden! :laughing11:

EDIT: I just looked closer, and that box of rubber gloves HAS A fudge-ING VOLUME KNOB ON IT - Go Keef! :headbang1:

The unknown mics are AKG 414's .... sort of a poor man's U87.  And double-micing like that is indeed a very common technique.

"Poor man's" being a relative term, since they're about $1K new <grin>

I've got a need for a mic which will pick up that slight distance micing (been using my SM57s/M160), but the AKG 414
(and definitely U87) condensers are out of my price range.

Couple of these would do the trick though:

Is this statement of what you are going to buy or are you asking the forum for suggestions?

If you are asking for suggestions, mine would be to check out the Neumann TLM102. It's about the same price as that M160 you have, and is getting some good reviews about the place.... I have been meaning to get one actually, for acoustic recording. Check whether it will do the job for the applciation you want it for. A very modestly priced Neumann with good real world working qualities.

Mind you, if you are going to distance the mic any reasonable length away from the sound source you would want to be in a very quiet environment OR have the room treated... it's surprising what a good condensor mic can pick up.

I want one of these

there is this guy around here who has a speed foot switch so he controls the speed while he is soloing, awesome sound, could not synth it for anything, all natural.

No, that's my target for "Next Mic Purchase".

Cripes it seems I can't control the GAS anymore...  :icon_jokercolor:

dude . . . not cool. get a legit Leslie 122 (warmer sound), or a 147/145 (more screamin' rock sound). IDK what that ugly guitar amp-looking leslie thing is, but nothing can beat the real deal.

This Leslie looks like something that would come packaged with a Fender Rhodes....Case looks very silverface era Fenderish...

In a totally unrelated search, this came up so I figured I'd better link or the Synchronicity God would ream me - parallelly! :o

RF's gear is very sweet indeed - and remember, that's the stuff he not keeping! I'm putting together a little something about his rigs through the years, I just need some cash and time to get my domain thingy running.

Ten? We're hijacking this topic. Name Classic Rock radio Stones hits. Everybody names at least 1 Stones hit
