I read somewhere that if a songwriter placed just ONE song on the "Classic Rock" list that gets played on radio stations all across America year after year, it was worth $70,000 to $90,000 a year. The Stones have like, ten?
I heard many years ago by pro musos, that if they got one song in the Top 100 for any stretch of time in the USA, the writer of that song would have a steady little pension waiting for them when he/she retires... Top 10 hit would be worth a fair bit more, but depending upon what 'royalties' you have divested yourself of, or been screwed out of, depends on how much money you actually see at the end of the day.
I still find it unfathomable that Marc Bolan's family (inc his son) don't see any money from his catalog & the families of Pete Ham and Tom Evans of Badfinger - who wrote quite a few top 10 songs - still see no money from such songs as "Without You"!
Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner, who haven't been in the Eagles since the mid-70s never have to work again because they played on an album that goes platinum every year.
