Tim: Seems pretty common-sense, that describes what I already do.  The article doesn't even mention fretting with the thumb.

Tonar: My hand also stretches 9" from pinky to thumb.  But I think my middle, ring, and index fingers are a lot longer than yours... I can reach the low E with any finger while fretting it with my thumb, though it's kind of a stretch.
