Show us your tattoos

I knew a Samoan guy that got about half of his body tattooed the old-school way with a plain needle (not a fancy tattoo gun) and squid ink as a coming of age ritual.  A customer at work is in the process of getting a Japanese body suit.  It has been a part of their culture and a part of most cultures for thousands of years.  Westerners are the ones who got all weirded out by it, but that is starting to change, at least here... it will kind of have to in the future since a huge amount of the population will have them.  And I don't neccessarily know that I'd call it a fad because so many people get tattoos in places that the vast majority of the public will ever see.  A fad would imply you're doing something to look cool, but if you never show anyone, how does it accomplish that?  I also kind of think of a fad as something that is fleeting.  I wouldn't call jeans a fad, they're just jeans.  Maybe at one time people thought they were a fad, but they've been around so long that now they're just a staple in the world of clothing.  Tattoos have been around a long, long time, and they're just becoming more accepted now, and I don't see them going away any time soon.

It is very possible to get any job you want if you have tattoos as long as you don't get them somewhere that you cannot cover up.  I know a teacher who has 8 tattoos (including one on her scalp), and it's no problem because only one of them is visible, and even that one you cannot see if she is wearing long sleeves.  As long as you don't get the tattoo on your neck, face, or hands, you can hide your tats in a job interview and later when you're on the job.  No one is going to ask you if you have hidden tattoos and then deny you a job simply because you have them.

I have thought of getting one for a while.  It would be there to remind me of something important that happened a while back.  I would get it where no one would see it except for me and my husband.  But I don't think I'll ever actually get it because I would have to design it myself, and I don't think I'll ever be quite satisfied enough with my design to get it permanently put on my skin.

One of my brothers is about half-way through one of those "body suits". Looks kinda like Ray Bradbury's "Illustrated Man" ( very good book, btw), but more detailed and without the facial treatment...

As far as designing your own, I'm not sure you're giving yourself enough credit. From what I've seen of your taste in guitars, you have a good eye. Plus, from what I understand, a good tat guy can "fix up" concepts so they'll look right stretched different ways and with the color set they have to work with.

Next fad to gain acceptance & popularity - getting tats and plastic surgery, et al. to look like an animal:

(moral of the story:  Just because people do it, doesn't prove they're not idiots LOL)

I love the Illustrated man, and Most of bradburys earlier work.

I wanted to get a tattoo of one of the last scenes from Martian Chronicles, where there is a silhouette of children playing in a yard burnt into the side of an abandoned house... but I really don't know how well that will work out.

which is okay, because my first project is going to be getting most of the Labyrinth characters on my my left leg.  and that will take YEARS.

I met the lizard dude once.

he was a cool, intelligent and friendly guy.

...now...

I met him in the Sporting Goods section of Wal-Mart...

take from that what you will.

IMO, tattoos are losing their stigma, mainly because full sleeves are finding their way into white collar jobs.  More people have them now, and a lot of them.  They're no longer just for inmates, musicians, and the military.  Look at how the image of Harleys and bikers has changed.  Now the worst thing you can do is smoke.

Let's see some more tattoos!

Yeah, I think it's just because new generations gradually take over.

And by the way nice tattoos James :headbang:, I'm probably going to get one on the forearm saying "Have a good time all the time". Not only is it how I like to live so it actually has a meaning to me BUT, it's also a quote from the Spinal Tap movie!! Perfect tattoo :glasses9:.

Why thank you! I'm currently sitting at work listening to people get their first's haha.

It's not that I think my design will be bad, it's that I don't think I'll ever be done with it.  I would get it put on and then decide a year later that it really wasn't finished or that there is something I should have left out, and that would drive me nuts.

^ this is why I make it a point to never design Tattoo's for myself. or to design tattoo's for relatives.

It is so much easier to see the flaws in your own work.

that is not tasteful, that is freak

I'm strongly considering being the world's first "Lizard Man".

Don't know how I'm going to do the tail, though.  :icon_scratch:

It just says too much about your emotional/intellectual stability, and none of it positive.

Laying it all on emotional or intellectual stability is a bit much, man. Come on. Just because you don't like tats and don't have any doesn't mean that people that do have them are mental midgets with mother issues. Some people get them when they're young and stupid and think that it's the cool thing to do. I have 2 tattoos that I would get rid of in a heartbeat if I could. I got them when I was young and ignorant of what the future would hold. Neither of them are in a place that hampers me, and no one sees them unless I decide to show them off, but if I could turn back time I'd definitely walk right past the tat parlor and never look back. Stupid kid stuff, man, no more, no less.

A friend gave me an unplanned tattoo in the sixth grade.  Pencil to the palm of the hand.  20 years later it's still quite visible.

I have 2 of those too. One in my thigh and one on the thumb of my right hand.
