I have a better idea than purchasing a "relic" guitar. How'bout if you just make your own by playing the Hell outta your own guitar? :headbang1:
Wow, what a concept!
Who woulda thought, right? :cool01:
Go buy an American Standard Fender for about $800, then play it! It's cheaper, and more fun to watch it "grow" into a relic! :icon_biggrin:
I know the "relic" debate is a sore spot with some people (on both sides of the issue), and I don't want to stop anyone from having what they want, but what I really just don't "get" is that even if you like fake "relic" guitars,
why would you pay extra for one, or buy a new one when
you could just make your own?? I can beat up my own guitars if I want to, I don't need a guitar factory to do it for me. Of course to me, a real relic is one that got that way naturally from years of use, and I have no interest in a fake one, but if you like fake ones, it just makes no sense to pay a bunch of money for something fake, like the guitar in the original post of this thread.
I'm with ya all the way, man.
Personally, I don't like beaten up guitars. I have a 1994 Tele that I've played for years, and I just take excellent care of it. After playing, I wipe it down, I don't play it shirtless if I'm wearing pants with exposed buttons, and I try my best to stay away from walls. Things happen, and I'm sure one day, I will run into a wall or something with it, but until then, it's in excellent condition.
I just scratch my head over why people pay a premium over a standard guitar for these. :icon_scratch: I can remember back in the 80s, a new pair of jeans with holes in them cost a fortune over a basic pair of jeans. Hell, I just wore the crap outta mine, and they developed their own holes. People were asking me where I got them, because the rips looked so authentic! THEY
WERE "AUTHENTIC" RIPS!
I'm repeating myself here, but given how obsessed I am with keeping my guitars in pristine shape, the only advantage I can see to owning a "relic" is because I'm not going to care if I bang it on anything. Not to mention, I just don't know why someone would want a guitar with half of a finished neck, a rusty bridge, etc. These are the types of things I'd be replacing, not purchasing.
What's even more, is I just don't understand the beat up guitars like the "SRV" model, which apparently fetches $17000. His "replica" is beaten up, just like the one he played, but why not build a replica that
ISN'T beaten up? :icon_scratch: Nobody's guitar starts as a beaten up mess, it gets that way with years of abuse. Want me to spend $17000 on an SRV model, give me the brand new version.
