Roasted maple fretless neck

Hello,

I was just wondering, could a roasted maple would be suitable for fretless bass neck/fingerboard? And would it requires any finish over the fingerboard, or would it be hard enough by itself?

Don't know about bass, but for a guitar yes.  Should be hard enough.
