Quick question. Stain/paint and uh... yeah (Korina)

Hey, guys. I'm a total noob when it comes to finishing, but I'm planning on doing it anyway. Exactly how would I go about duplicating this look, or something close to it? Maybe the natural part on the left side, but more in the shape of racing/competition stripes. No spray gun or air compressor, so I think I'd have to use a spray can. I saw a post on here talking about that, and thought maybe that could be an idea. I saw DangerousR6's guitar (walnut) and he said he used Watco's danish oil. Would that work in this case? Korina body (solid) Z shaped? I was originally gonna go with WGD, but I figured it would be a little odd to look at. Any advice?

very cool piece...love the kahler.

I would stain the center piece...or what ever you want to be not painted, then seal, mask, paint the rest, then remove the mask and clear...simple! :laughing11:

You can use just about any stain available, the real question is finding one that provides the color you desire.  Thankfully you have large portions of the body that will eventually be covered with paint, making them ideal as test sections for various stains.

General Finishes makes a nice selection of water based dye stains, one is called Merlot and it might come close to the picture you've posted.

I always use minwax stains.  I have found dyes to not work well on Korina...

Sounds like a plan. Never thought about it. But what kind of paint/finish do I use? Just a few regular cans? I got some standard Krylon spray gloss. Says, "Indoor/outdoor protective, non-yellowing clear finish"

Beautiful geetar your attempting to replicate.  I think it could likely need a few more switches...  :headbang1:
Anxious to see what you come up with!  Be sure to post some pics as you work it out.

Lol. Mos def, bro. I can't wait to get this show on the road. I'm not too fond of the shape of the Z though. I might have to do a little altering. When it comes to pickups though I'm stuck between the Duncans (JB bridge and 59 neck) and the D'Marzios (Tone Zone and Evolution). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Q2aVHfDa7k Here's an example of the two different sounds. I think I'm leaning more towards the Duncans though.

Tuff decision... I like the sounds of both pickups; however, they both their particular settings where they stand out best!
I think overall that I like the Duncans better, but that's just my opinion.
Good Luck  :headbang:

I was thinking about the Marzios at first, but yeah I think the Duncans are just a little bit smoother. I think it would compliment the wood a little better... But then again I love the squeal of the Dimarzios. I have a shitty amp though, so it would be worse to listen to at home. Lol. My Twin Reverb was stolen right out the back of my van a year ago. Went and got a First Act from Walmart :sad1: I know. Eww, right?

You're right. I'm makin alot of noise now.

So this is the oil I found. It looks close enough to the color of it, right? http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=85932-24-70040&lpage=none

Make sure the paint you use is "sandable"                        Don't use the indoor outdoor paint for painting a wicker chair. that paint is designed to go on thick and look good and durable in one coat, but you cant sand it or buff it

You want paint that can be sanded and buffed,  go to the autoparts store and see if you can find dupli-color,  It's great stuff, several of us on here us it, it shoots easy, dries fast, sands and buffs nicely

Ok. Now it's all coming together. For a thick coat of white how many do I spray on? 4 of white and 2 clear, or...
