question about building a 6 string bass with deluxe 5 neck

Hi,

I would like to build a narrow-spaced 6 string bass using a deluxe 5 neck (with 1 7/8" nut), and am wondering whether wood and rod choice matters much due to the extra tension -- I'd prefer to use maple/maple and the steel rods, but if it would be safer to use a denser wood combination, that would be ok... any opinions? If heavy woods like purpleheart were used, I'd probably want to have graphite rods for weight saving, but I'm also unsure about whether graphite or steel rods provide more stiffness.

Thanks

I would think it could be done, however, I think the only problem would be VERY TIGHT string spacing.  :icon_thumright:
