LTD. Anything 70's with Big Funk, and Big Horns.

You know, in a lot of ways AC/DC seems to capture some of the essence of 70's funk, but you usually don't notice because you're distracted by the horns growing out of the head, and non-master Marshall in heat.  But sit back and listen to it sometime. Or listen to 70's funk riffs and imagine crushing guitar replacing some of the main riff drivers.

It's no big secret that behind any great band is a great bass player. But I'm convinced that behind a lot of iconic guitar riffs is ... actually a pretty good guitar riff and an drummer that can really set the stage. Notice how much space they leave him some time. Notice too what really drives 'You Shook Me' is the kick/snare syncopation that carries the verse.

Then go back and listen to your seventies funk again. Funk based on big patterns, not intricate 32nd note chickas, but the big picture. Players leaving space for the drums. I'm getting really conflicted, because I see this guitar as percussive instrument (not unpitched, just driving the attack portion home), and really want to dig into it. But when I start jamming, this legato vocal thing from my past comes out.

A song I made last night: AutoBat - Gordon Shumway https://soundcloud.com/autobat/gordon-shumway
Some funk since swarfrat mentioned it: Graham Central Station - Pow! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1IuD6F3R5I
Primus bass cover Medley: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7M0ufSW2jE

I'm listening to the album Something, by Chairlift, a lot at the moment. That and Muse's new one, The 2nd Law.

Also, because of the fact that my 8-month-old boy loves it, we hear Slash's Apocalyptic Love a lot in our house. That plus the videos for California Gurls (ok, I quite like looking at that one too) and Gangnam Style.

Christmas tunes....over and over....  Got a holiday gig coming up.

Scott Kelly's most recent solo album, "The Forgiven Ghost in Me." In a lot of ways it's very different from his work in Neurosis, but there's some overlap.

I like you.

I'm impressed by how much I've liked the stuff that's been mentioned here. I'd never heard of glitchmob or airbag before and both have been well worth my time.
