O.K., they got me. Honestly, when I first heard Derek Trucks around 1999, I didn't get that woowoo feeling - because I can and had played much like that for several years in the 80's, and Trucks had some holes in his playing and technique. Very repetitive, not a whole lot of melody-construction devices and tricks in his toolbox (these are actually about the same thing) and above all, HE DIDN'T KEEP TRACK OF THE SLIDE AT ALL TIMES. He'd make a big mushy roar up all the strings, play his lick, then slide down the neck with all the strings ringing in no key at all - it sounded awful.
But, lo and behold, he's fixed ALL that - the 2013 edition Trucks is getting that terrifying, supernatural glow. The absolute best possible thing that could have happened to him was going out on a stage night after night and year after year with Warren Haynes. They've achieved a great friendship & empathy, but - Derek knows if he doesn't KEEP on it, still get better every single month - Warren Haynes will
happily smoke his tits. And of course the reverse is true...

Do you have any IDEA of how dangerous is is to cover "1983 - a Merman I Should Hope to Be?"

Haynes often works these out with Gov't Mule, the farm team as it were. But li'l Derek is exhibiting a great confidence now, he can even wake up 70-year-old drummers. :icon_biggrin:
And THIS - at 6:27 he tells noodle-trumpbutt to shut up and go away, he's got something to SAY ->
