So, the other day an Amazon package arrived unannounced at my house.  In that package were 6 in-line Planet Waves Auto-Trim Tuners.  I have been planning my next build, but I have no recollection of ordering these tuners  ??? - alcohol and my AmEx card may have been involved...  :tard:

Anyone have any experience with Planet Waves tuners?  Are they any good?  Should I use them in my next build (likely a hybrid tele) or should I return them and go with the locking Fender tuners?  (FWIW I am not a stickler for authenticity, just good materials for a good guitar.)

Hi,

I have these on several guitars, some of them for almost 10 years.  They lock well, tune well, and the auto-trim is the cat's ass. I love them.  I think they are great.

Actually on reflection there is one issue:  the posts are not staggered, which depending on your headstock might require string trees.

Other than that though, I think they are great.

This is my only real beef with them on a straight headstock like a Strat or Tele.

Otherwise, they're awesome on Tilt Backs.

Autotrim sounds neat. I've spent the last 3 of 4 years of my boys life carefully turning string ends back on themselves with needle nose pliers during string changes to avoid sharp pokey ends after a 1yo playing with daddy's guitar managed to poke himself and bleed all over it. He's old enough now to know to mind the pointy bits.

I have them on a couple guitars and they work great. The only issue that I've had is that over time, the lip on the shaft of the b and high e strings has stopped cutting the string consistently. Not a big deal at all since the tuner still works fine. Just a snip with the pliers and all is good.

I've seen them do that from new, so while it's a convenient feature, I don't have a great deal of faith in it. But, even if that feature doesn't work, they still perform well as tuners, so they're not a complete waste. At least they're still locking tuners.

I've probably got these PW tuners on at least twenty guitars, so obviously I like them, but I do have a few issues with them.  Besides the non-staggered issue already mentioned, my other nitpick with them is aesthetic — the post and cutter are always black, even on the chrome or gold sets.  Not a huge deal, but.. well, you know how it is.
