Pinecaster / Snakehead

I started a new project recently. It's been a little slow going but making progress. I had been "pining"  :icon_tongue: for a pinecaster and I needed another rig for some new pickups so it seemed the time was right. I know a few builders and one of them wanted to help me out. If I had the time I would have taken on the body myself.

I went to a local lumber yard and selected out a nice white pine board. It was about 9/4 thick and roughly 8 1/2" wide, nice and light too. It was difficult not to pickup on some of the other cool woods I saw but I do plan a return trip. Already planning another build..

My luthier friend took the board and carved out a tele body routed for two P90 sized pickups, tele bridge, strat neck pocket, and rear routed controls. The neck pocket had to be strat because the neck I wanted came strat standard and the upcharge was a little more than what I budgeted for this build. The body's final weight is 3lbs 3oz. Very, very light. I have a chrome control cover plate which will put a little weight in just the right spot.

The neck is a Warmoth straight paddle, fatback, vintage modern, maple, side dots only. I wanted to create a snakehead for this build so I decided to cut that out myself. I would have preferred a vintage build but it was not an option for the paddle head. Oh well. I am not trying to re-create anything just have some fun. I wanted to paint the dots on myself as well. I wanted a slightly smaller dot than available. I drilled the tuner holes to be 1/4" to accept 3 on a plate and not use bushings. I really wish W offered a snakehead. (hint  :icon_thumright:)

It will be receiving a finish starting this week. The body will be an oly white without a clear coat, and the neck will be nitro finish. The pickups are something I've wanted to do for some time and after being approached by a builder who wanted the same thing, I just had to make some. I may put them into production soon. The bridge for this guitar will be a Wilkinson tele half bridge. Controls are master vol. , master tone, and 3way toggle.

So... uh... what pickups are you using?

They are being call "P80s" at the moment. It's just like a P90 only the poles are alnico 5 rod. I may be putting a device on the base to spread the magnetic flux out a bit like a P90 would. I may do them with and without. I suppose in a way they are more like a jazzmaster with P90 geometry. I am playing with the coil structure a bit too. There are a few other ideas / versions I will be trying as well once the "test" rig is built.

oooh I dig the sound of that, magnetic pole pieces in a p-90 seems like an awesome idea. Add some keeeeRAAAAAAANNNGGG to the sound!

It is going to be a really nice build.  Are you going to use a Tele Half Bridge or a six saddle hardtail as with the La Cabronita ?  Like Hannaugh, I cannot wait to see the finished product.

Now you have inspired me to build something like this :

That was supposed to be a stupid question :P I meant to ask where you're getting the pickups from.

Oh sorry to not play along. A little sleep deprived this weekend.... ROADHOUSE! ROADHOUSE PICKUPS! Heh heh heh.

Hannaugh, I will be posting a full set of clips once done. That is provided this hunk o' wood doesn't mush out on me... Never having played one I just don't know, and there are so many types of pine.. Next one I build................. Doug Fir!

Max, you have run across the guy who routed it out for me. He is on the Offset guitar forum. He's been doing some really cool stuff of late!

Yeah, G, JWells who seems to have removed his membership built one using a W paddle. I love that guitar and it certainly was an inspiration for this one. I'll be using the half bridge on this, which I also think is a sexy bridge.

Stereordinary seems like he's always doing neat stuff.

Yes! and we have a project going that is finally coming to completion. I've been dying to play it. Unfortunately I've been sworn to secrecy until completion. :sad1:

Well she is finally done!

I love it! It's extremely light and very acoustic when unplugged. Plugged in it really resonates. The pine is white pine and is very soft, very easy to ding. The finish is white / lacquer no clear coat. The neck is also a lacquer finish. Hand painted dots, tuners without bushings.

I wasn't originally going to put a pickguard on but decided it needed it. The switch placement where I wanted it and layed out before the pickguard was thought of. Oh well, it works. The pickups sound great! Kind of a blend of strat / and P90. In the middle position it really sounds great. Very tele like.

One quick clip. A little Duane Eddy thing. From the very first album I ever owned and which was very inspiring musically. Get a few more once it's dialed in.

That's a fine lookin' axe, Ken.  My sole complaint is that the soundclip ended just as it was time for the drums and bass to kick in and really bring on the swamp groove.
