So, what are the various pups floating around here, kids? In my first Warmoth Strat I have DiMarzio Tone Zone S in the bridge (coild tapped), Dimarzio Area 51 in the center, and a DiMarzio Heavy Blues II in the neck.

For my next Strat build I'm 99.99% sure that I'm going with Van Zandt "Blues" pups. I've also been thinking heavily about VooDoo pickups. Right now I'm not 100% sure which one I'm going with but the Van Zandt's are pulling the lead.

VooDoo pups may be the way to go in trying out off-brand names who often supply scatter wound coils.  Some other names who make excellent replacement pickups are Pete Biltoft's Vintage Vibe, Harmonic Design, Rumplestilskins and BG Pickups.  Remember, these makers are what Lindy Fralin and Abigail Ybarra are all about from the beginning of time when pickups were individually wound by hand.  They do sound unique with lots of vintage character in tone, response and clarity.

I was looking into some Dimarzios to take care of the hum. Toss up between the virtual vintage/ VV blues/ VV heavy blues. Then maybe a billy corgan sig. in the bridge.

in my custom build i've got a tv jones supertron in the neck, kent armstrong hum sized P90 in the middle, and a squire pickup in the bridge.

DAMMIT!! Unwoound!!! I get close to making a decision and you pull me back down to the VooDoo's!!! Hehe!! I really like the sound of the Van Zandt Blues though. I need to go to youtube and find player reviews of VooDoo's.

you made me start longing again :laughing7:

Dimarzio Virtual P90 in the neck and a Dimarzio Super Distortion in the bridge. just can't beat the Super Distortion in my opinion!

You know, I've never used the Super Distortion. Oddly enough though, I have a full sized Super Distortion humbucker right here in my bag. I bought it off of some guy for like 30 bucks. Never had it installed in any of my guitars. Maybe Maz is right, maybe I should build one more.

wondering how a white Super Distortion would look in one of those burl bodies I posted up the other day?

With that note, 3 guitar are needed.

Yo MullyMan,  I built an axe for a buddy last year and we installed the VanSandts,  They sound great, very bluesy and yet powerfull, rockin, a class all to their own. I was Blown away.

Having said that, do what ya want i don't care, all the "Name Brand" pups sound good, if you pick a pup that people say is a good pup, more than likely it is.

This might sound goofey, but I think there are more "Good" sounding pups than Bad, and heres why, the only pups that sound bad are underwound, and / or not potted ( Wax or laquer ), and the only people who are doing this are companies trying to save pennies per unit and mass producing them.  It really is hard to screw up making pickups if you give one little shite about how they sound.

I know theres more reasons pups can sound bad, but it really comes down to trying to save a penny here and there, some bean counter again driving some poor bastard into the ground.

Thanks for the vote on Van Zandt. I've been sitting here all morning searching and watching reviews of various pickups and I gotta say for all out ballsy blues tone those Van Zandt Blues pickups seem to be the ones that sound like what I have in my head. Guess I'm going with Van Zandt.

Why not try one of each, a Van Zandt a VooDoo and a Dimarzio all together...Thus ends the dilemma....

In my warmoth strat I have Dimarzios. They sound great!

Neck:   BC-1 (Billy Corgan)
Middle: Chopper
Bridge: BC-2

In my current build going to put Dimarzios too!

Neck: Air Norton
Middle: Pro Track
Bridge: Tone Zone or Super Distortion( Can't decide ???)

How is the billy corgan? I've been thinking about putting one in the bridge position of my strat.

Tell you the truth the Billy Corgan Dimarzios are my favorite. Everything is just right. The bass is punchy, the highs cut but are still in control, and mids are good too. Like a tone zone or a super distortion are a 10 out of 10, the Billy Corgan is and 11.

I just ordered a "dirty blonde" strat set (Blondes in the neck and middle, Specials in bridge) from Lollar yesterday, really excited.
